Capital letters... ABC - XYZ

does anybody else just feel that little jab of dissapointment when we come across a topic title or opening sentence that doesnt begin with a capital letter?
I'm really not trying to be petty or snobby or anything like that, this is a genuine feeling I am admitting to when I see this very simple rule of the written language broken.

For debate, does it make the writer come across as immature, lazy, maybe even stupid to you?
Do some of you even ignore a topic or skip a sentence completely when it's written like the poster themself couldn't even make an effort for her/his own title or personal opinion to stand out?

I am admitting that on occassions it does.
So what are your thoughts in this small lack of effort in writing?

Doesn't matter. The ONLY issue I will ever have is if the grammar is so bad, it's hard to tell what the poster is trying to say. Otherwise, using improper words (i.e. there/thier/they're) I do find annoying, but not enough to bother with.

Ahem.

And it bugs the fuck out of me when people don't write properly. Occasional spelling mistakes are fine, but walls of text, a lack of punctuation, and no capital letters are irritating.

It does bother me. If the poster didn't take their topic seriously, I'm certainly not going to. What annoys me more though is someone writing "then" instead of "than". An example would be someone typing "The Earth is bigger >then< the moon". When I see that mistake in someone's post I either point it out to them and tell them what is correct, or if I am in a bad mood I imediately stop reading and discount their opinion.

I have even seen people writing than instead of then recently, which is even worse.

Unfortunately I'm used to it, so while I notice I probably don't say anything. I do understand though that it does happen accidentally and that not everyone who does make mistakes like that simply doesn't care.

Lack of proper capitalization and incorrect usage of words (to/too/two, their/they're/there, and so on) irritate me because I'm ripped out of the reading experience. If the writer couldn't be arsed to double-check his writing then why should I take the time to read it?

Yes that is another thing, all writing must be properly punctuated. If not it is actually painful for me to read. If I see a wall of text, I read no further.

I tend to slip into the 'If they didn't bother punctuating it, why should I bother reading it?' mentality. I do slap myself on the wrist and tell myself not to be elitist, however.

Pretty much the same. I always correct my errors (or at least try to), so my posts are easy to read (if a bit verbose). And I can tolerate some abbreviations, internet acronyms, spelling/grammatical errors, but sometimes you come across these hideously long posts that just aren't English any more, so you go 'fuck this, I'm going to read a book!'

I do prefer people using correct grammar, at least to the extent of their knowledge of English.

But I still pressed this topic, and it doesn't have capital letters, and I didn't mind.

Y'know I did that on purpose right? To test the reader and their opinion on captital letters. You only have to look at every post I've made to know I dont make such an easy mistake =)

Again.. I did it on purpose to test the reader... come on. I'm not stupid enough to screw up on my own post =)

There's a teeny tiny jab of annoyance when someone doesn't even manage to properly write his topic title. You'd think people pay attention to that. No real problem though.

On the other hand if someone consequently doesn't bother to use proper capitalization and punctuation, I never read what they have to say. So many people use the 'but I'm dyslectic' excuse that half the internet population is probably dyslectic by now. And occasional error is understandable, but at least try, even if English isn't your native language (like me).

Actually, I'm fine with it. Asking people to write flawlessly on a forum is an exercise in futility.

Besides, if they're consistent with their use of lower case, then it really isn't a problem.

Walls of text with no paragraphs, proper spelling or punctuation is very irritating though. Not just because I get biased against the author, but because it becomes impossible to read.

[sub]However: Your/you're, they're/their, its/it's.. it isn't hard, people.[/sub]

I'm not really angry about it but yes it injects a little disappointment into me. Disappointment that someone was so lazy they couldn't take 10 seconds to look back over their words for errors.

Have you kept track of the amount of people getting the then/than thing wrong? I swear it's more than half.

Was so tempted to put a then in there but it just made me feel dirty.

You haven't been on the interwebs for very long, have you? Illiteracy and poor grammar are running rampant, and i don't believe there is any way to stop the advance.

I think it's alright to experiment with grammar on internet; it makes it easier to express subtle nuances you're trying to make.
Hate it when people are just lazy at typing or overdoing it to look kool.
