Former Tonight Show Host Conan O'Brien Ditches Fox for TBS

When Conan O'Brien was fired by NBC this winter, many people thought he would be on TV again soon, but not on TBS.

Conan O'Brien is not going to Fox or even Comedy Central. He instead will be appearing on TBS (Turner Broadcasting System) as early as November. The potential deal with Fox soured when it was clear that the network wasn't going to let O'Brien own his show. TBS was ready to play ball, however, offering a reported 8 figure deal and complete show ownership. O'Brien was initially reluctant to bump George Lopez from his 11pm EST time slot, like Leno did to him this year, but was persuaded when the Latino comic called him personally to urge him to come to TBS. The new show will be based in Los Angeles and run on a four show per week schedule similar to Jimmy Kimmel. O'Brien begins his live national comedy tour today in Eugene, Oregon.

"In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said. "My plan is working perfectly."

It's been a bumpy ride for Conan O'Brien over the last 12 months or so. He took over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno on June 1st, 2009, a move that had been planned since O'Brien signed a contract in 2004. Leno refused to leave late night, however, and started a show on NBC in the 10 o'clock slot on Sept. 14. After that show received lackluster ratings, Jeff Zucker met with Leno and O'Brien and hatched a plan to move The Tonight Show to 12:05am and bump The Jay Leno Show to 11:35. O'Brien issued a statement on January 12 saying:

I sincerely believe that delaying The Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't The Tonight Show.

Indeed, it would be the Tomorrow Show.

Both NBC and O'Brien stuck to their guns, with O'Brien having a public forum to hilariously air his grievances, and he resolved to leave his dream of hosting The Tonight Show. His last show was memorable if only for his closing statements:

All I ask is one thing, and I'm asking this particularly of young people that watch: Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record it's my least favorite quality. It doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.

I'm not sure if moving to TBS is exactly what he had in mind, but it sounds like he will have the creative control and the compensation to more than make up for the rough year that he's had.

And for the record. The Escapist is with Coco. Mostly because of gems like this from his Twitter announcement today [http://twitter.com/ConanOBrien/status/12055203405]:

The good news: I will be doing a show on TBS starting in November! The bad news: I'll be playing Rudy on the all new Cosby Show.

Oh well. Never liked Conan much. I actually preferred Leno.

Conan fanboys and their "I'm with Coco" stuff. It's not like it was Leno's fault. NBC execs were to blame.

Look at what Leno did to Letterman and rethink that. I think Leno was just as much to blame. He could have retired and left for good, and refused to steal the show away from Conan. He didn't.

Also, he's not funny. And is a shill.

I still find him funny. He's just referencing pop culture.

I like Conan. He's way funnier than Leno and he is so charming. Also, I like his Irish jokes.

Because Conan is a huge Geek. He was a writer for the Simpsons way back in the day, which some people consider the best years for The Simpsons.

Good for Conan. It's nice to see this silliness is about to come to an end, an end composed of more silliness (albeit a different flavor).

I've always loved O'Brian. :) He's up there with Stewart, and Colbert. I was upset when I first heard Leno counldn't take bad ratings, and the networks solution was to return everything to status quo, bumping everyone around like pin balls.

I knew a man of O'brians talent would land something great. Sad for me that it's on basic cable, since I only get basic TV. :( But great for O'brian!

I loved that burly fake brawl thing they did.

I know Conan writes some of his own stuff, does Leno? If he does then he sucks, if he doesn't then he needs better writters.

I saw that. It was a week long event that culminated in their 3-way brawl, if I remember correctly. :D SO fantastic!

Leno is a different brand of funny. He appeals to a different generation, whereas Conan has always appealed to youth (and like me, youth-that-grew-up-but-stayed-young-anyway). :) I don't mind Leno at all. I just wish that he could have accepted failure rather than run crying to his biggest fan; NBC chairman. He could have done something ELSE with his 10pm time slot. 10pm is a good timeslot! It's just, his old slot was routine for so many.

And here I thought this drama was done with...
Conan may have finally found his niche in TBS. That network is about 50/50 for comedy, which Conan is.

I'm just glad the masturbating bear has found a new home (that is, if NBC doesn't own the rights to him).

EDIT: Also, Jay Leno appeals to old people that watch him to fall asleep.

How do you link this video when they have a Conan "corporate shill" version to the right, just 7 videos down...

Anyway, Leno doesn't really appeal to me. His jokes are from the badumtish [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Frd53vbCHLg&feature=related] era.

Likewise, while I like Conan, its easy to see why some people wouldn't like his brand of humor.

I might have been happier with this news if Conan had in fact knocked Lopez off of TBS. I don't know anyone who watches Lopez, and I never personally found him that funny to start with. At least it appears there is hope that Conan has a home, for now. Would have made more sense on Comedy Central, but they've got a good lineup with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Perhaps a talk show wouldn't quite fit in there, oddly enough. Thank goodness he didn't work a deal with E!.
