FPS for beginners

So, I've never really been into FPS. I don't really see the appeal. I've had some fun with Unreal Tournament (don't know which one) and I can see that Half Life is probably quite good, but I die really quickly and give up. My brother's COD mad so I've had a go on various CODs, and died really quickly and gave up. In short, I'm just not very good at it.

But I'm looking to broaden my gaming horizons so...can anyone recommend a FPS for beginners? Something where I'm not going to panic and die in the first five minutes, preferably.

Also, I think some of my badness stems from the first person aspect...I'm not bad at Battlefront when I play from a third person perspective. So can anyone recommend a "third person shooter" if there is such a thing?

... third person shooters are pretty damn common tbh. The main one being Gears of War.

Gears of War for a 3PS. Best out there, in my opinion.

As for an FPS for beginners? Just throw in COD and put it on Recruit. Set your sensitivity to what suits you too. That could kill you if you're using your brother's sensitivity which you don't like.

Play Portal 2 and record it. I would really love to see how much someone can struggle with an FPS puzzle platformer game when they've never even played an FPS.

EDIT: o wait, you HAVE played one before, you just aren't good at them......do it anyway.

I'd say a Metroid Prime game, if you can get the trilogy for Wii, as it's not so much about shooting as it is exploring in first person. I think it would be great, especially with its lock on feature, to ease you into first person gaming. If it's a third person shooter that you're looking for, I'd recommend Gears of War 2, or if you're looking for more of a story-driven third person shooter-esque game, go for the Mass Effect series, as its RPG aspects are deep enough that the shooting varies, but not so vital that you get lost in statistics.

if you have an xbox 360, go for Earth Defense Force 2017

bullshit amounts of fun to be had there

of course it's no Gears of War or Vanquish, I mean, it's not as polished or has really high production values

but when I played it, it felt like Schwarzenegger's Commando, if it was a video game, and you had to kill giant alien insects and robots

(seriously, it even has one-liners like "DO YOU LIKE DEATH!? THEN DIE"

Sounds like you should just not bother. If you do not enjoy them, why play them? I rarely play RTS games since I am not good at them and rarely enjoy them. Just because everyone else does it, does not mean you should, unless you actually want to.

Actually, Portal's one of my favourite games...not got 2 yet.

Yeah as soon as I hit "post" I thought "Ah...Gears of War". I played that with said brother a while back and was much better at it. I've not tried Metroid Prime so that sounds like it could be a good one to start, and then yeah I suppose I should really just try harder at COD and such...I suppose before I never really wanted to be good at it, yanno?

Thanks guys :)

Actually I'm looking into a career in the video game industry, probably design, so I want to at least play through an entire game of all the popular genres. I guess lots of people are like "I LIKE VIDEO GAMES SO I SHOULD MAKE THEM" but I really want to try and do it properly!

My recommendation is Red Faction: Geurilla. It's third person, the easy setting is easier than easy, and there's environmental destruction with a sledgehammer. What's not to like?

My other two suggestions are borderlands (because none of the players are trying to kill you, only help you), and Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas (because you have VATS to fall back on).

Well, I also would love to get into the gaming industry, and since I like quality games, I would only want to work on games I like, for the sake of myself, the game, and the gamers. If you want to play a shooter, then any shooter will be fine if you are fine with just doing story mode on easy. If you are looking for online, then there is not likely to be any easy ones.

Stick to single player easy modes until you get used to working your way around a controller. And try to stick to one game, you will get used to the controls easier that way, as you aren't constantly changing sensitivity, button usage, and game mechanics.

Time Crisis (the original) haha.

I wasn't into FPS untill I played Black Ops (yeah yeah, I know), I mostly stuck to Metal gear Solid/Final Fantasy/ Devil May Cry stuff. I was absolutely rubbish on COD:MW2, not so bad on Medal of Honour but I found COD:BO easy and actually got me into liking FPS. AND it has a zombies mode, always fun.

The shooting in GTA 4 was pretty good and MGS: Peace walker had pretty good shooting as well. Neither are really traditional shooters but I liked them much more than gears. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was very good also. If your brother enjoys COD than he probably has a copy of MW2. It has a third person mode online.
Although if you want to journey the lobbies of MW2 you're a much braver person than I. If you decide to do just that then remember when your inbox is full of tenth prestige lobby messages and 9 year olds have been screaming in your ear all day that you were warned.

For single player try BioShock. The game is a cakewalk on Normal; set it to Easy and you should sail right through it.

For multiplayer the only thing you can really do is practice, practice, practice. Pick up something slightly less crazy than COD, like Team Fortress or Left 4 Dead or Monday Night Combat, and just play the shit out of it until you get good. There is no secret. You must understand that You. Are Going. To Die. As in, A LOT. You will not even know why half the time. Watch the other players. Do what they do -- or try to. Eventually you'll catch on.

As for over-the-shoulder, Gears has been mentioned several times. I greatly enjoyed it as well.

Honestly you can try anything. Just play single player on the lowest difficulty. If you die, try again. Dieing really only matters in multiplayer.

Gears of War is fun. Just make sure he doesn't decide to use his radio when there are Kryll about.

Most FPS come with a difficulty setting, and despite what many people including myself may tell you, there's no shame in starting from the bottom. Any Halo game that isn't wars is usually fun, and Bulletstorm was a blast.
