You ever seen one of those youtube movies where American soldiers get shot and just stand back up or whatever? Did their body armour start flying off when hit?
Gets shot once or twice. The video didn't show you the soldier handing in his now-compromised armour to get a fresh set.

One bullet doesn't cause the thing to fall apart, but several bullets, explosions, rockets and the other hazards that your average videogame character goes through would cause degradation of armour, to the point where you would suddenly be losing bits. Then when you consider you're talking about fictional space marine armour that is usually metal and not cloth with metal plates inside...

Is any of this sinking through?
At that point anything remotely humanoid that used to reside inside the tin can is going to have been turned into paste long ago.

That bloody awful "Bet on Soldier" had a system like this. It worked kinda well, the rest of the game didn't.

Killzone 2 is having something along the lines of realtime bullet reaction so if you shoot them the right way their helmets can fall out when they die but I don't believe their armor breaks.

I guess nobody here has played Cortex Command. It's an indie game by Data Realms that is shaping up to be absolutely incredible. While the designers are still working on the programming of the game, they made it completely customizable and most of what the community has put out includes removable armor, as well as body parts: lose your legs and you can't walk, lose an arm and you can't shoot.

Not sure on how to link so copy and paste,
