I did a search already and didn't see anything that quite matched, so.

I've never really played any FPSes, aside from one I played at an arcade with a friend from time to time a couple years ago, and have decided to give the genre a shot before blowing it off as "random shooting at things."

Do any of y'all have any suggestions for a good FPS that has a solid story behind it? If I can't get into the story (for the record, I love JRPGs), then I probably won't get into it unless it has truly amazing graphics. I was thinking about getting Resident Evil 5, because for all it's "survival horror" it seems a lot more like "shoot zombies until they are dead" to me.

I have a PS2 and PS3, so Halo's out. And once again, for anyone who misses it, NO HALO. I don't have an Xbox and have no plans on getting one, either.

My comp is also a laptop and a Mac, so I don't use it for gaming.

Wait for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Killzone and Resistance have no story worth hearing but the first Modern Warfare was excellent

Have the awesome shotgun from Constantine.

EDIT: MISUNDERSTOOD THE QUESTION COMPLETELY.
Lol, ah yeah. Anyway. Half-Life is good, even if it's pretty old.

Modern Warfare had a good story.
I'd also reccomend Left 4 Dead. It has a story if you read all the graffiti and such.

Sort of.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect for your PS2. Good comedy game with solid FPS action that should suit a beginner. Quake for your Mac, not much of a story here but still worth trying a demo or something.

Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. To me it's better than the original since I'm a newfag who can't appreciate old games with better stories but poor graphics.
Plus it variously comes packaged with other great FPS games like CSS and Portal.
Play it. Now!

Personally, I recommend S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. Most immerse game I've ever played, but arguably it's an RPG/FPS hybrid, rather than a straight-up FPS.

Besides this, I also recommend Rainbow Six Vegas and the Battlefield series, but don't try any of these until you're a decent FPS player; Rainbow Six and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are tough on new players, even on easier difficulties.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect
Urban Chaos: Riot Response
Darkwatch
Project Snowblind

And yeah, if you had an Xbox I'd add some Halo and Unreal Championship 2: Liandri Conflict to the list. And Riddick. I'll also recommend Unreal Tournament 3 just on the strength of the series, even though I haven't played it. The PS2 also has ports of the original Deus Ex and Half-Life, so keep that in mind.

"I killed 10 Zombies!"
"I killed 100 zombies!"
"I killed 53,595 zombies!!"
"Liar!!"

The only problem here is that Left 4 Dead is only out on PC/360.
Which sucks for the OP, as Left 4 Dead is awesome.

To the OP.
May I suggest Rainbow Six Vegas 2?

It's a Tom Clancy game, so the story doesn't really go much further than "They is terrorists, kill they ass" but it's not an uneducated story.
Gameplay is pretty sweet also.

If you are new to shooters I would say that Halo as a series is a good logical choice as these days many shooters in some way copy it. So if you are getting started then this is a good choice.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I was at the nearby game store yesterday just poking around, and ended up picking up Bioshock for the PS3 on a whim (I completely forgot about Half-Life, which I had decided to look for. I'm going back on Saturday to pick up the new Kingdom Hearts game, so I'll look for it then). I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but will soon.

I also downloaded Marathon, and will give it a go once I've found my mouse (it's packed up...somewhere.)

Thanks again!

Bioshock was a really, really good choice. I was totally unprepared for how good that game is.

I personally enjoy Killzone 2 as well, but I feel the story cuts off way too soon.

Resistance: Fall of Man has a good story, in my opinion. Resistance 2... well, if story is what you are after, you're best judging via the original.

For story: Deus Ex, Bioshock, uhhh

For Multiplayer:
Counter Strike or Day of Defeat. (Or even TF2, the random weapon thing is really fun).
