I've been playng a game called Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch. It's a total conversion mod for Doom 2, came out a little under a year ago. The community has died down a bit, but if you go on at the right times you'll find people playing, and I plan on starting a dedicated server for my clan in the next week or two.

ARMA 2 is free now.
Ooh. Where abouts? I see Steam has a demo up.

Starcraft 2 has a sort of free mode now. As does WoW. Though they're more like extended demos.

I was keeping a list and I've downloaded a bunch but haven't got around to them. Here's the list (Sorry I lack links):

Action Games: Alien Swarm, Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, Guxt, Mechwarrior 4, The Suffering

Adventure Games: Beneath a Steel Sky, Digital: A Love Story, Don't Take it Personally Babe This Just Ain't Your Story, King?s Quest I, King?s Quest II, King?s Quest III, Quest for Glory II

Puzzle Games: Peggle Extreme

Fighting Games: Vanguard Princess

FPS/TPS Games: Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Marathon, Marathon 2, Marathon Infinity, Quake, Team Fortress 2, Tribes 2, Wolfenstein 3D

Platforming Games: Abuse, Blendimals, The Blob, Cave Story, Fragotto & Friends, N, Spelunky

Racing Games: Trackmania Nations

Rhythm Games: Frets on Fire, Osu!

Role-Playing Games: Akuji the Demon, Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, Clock of Atonement, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, Eternal Daughter, Ikachan, Nethack, Professor McLogic Saves The Day, Space Funeral, Ultima IV: Quest for the Avatar

Simulation Games: Cloud

Strategy Games: The Battle for Wesnoth, Dwarf Fortress, Star Contol 2

There's some classics on there, obscure indies, and a few games that have more recently been made free. It's not super up to date and I've barely played any of them. Man, I have a lot of stuff to play despite having no money...

There are a handful of free games on http://www.gog.com/, plus a shedload of really cheap games if they take your fancy.

Warzone 2100 is a free RTS game that's, well not my cup of tea. But friends I know that like RTS say it's fantastic.

Runes of Magic is an MMORPG that's free. You can pay for stuff to upgrade bag space, bank space and get shiny new things, but I played for months and never needed to spend a penny.

First off welcome to TF2 I hope you enjoy it! :)

And I'd try Runes of Magic, I hear it's good. But honestly once you've got TF2 there's not much better out there!

Try the following:

Ground Control
System Shock 2
Mechwarrior 4
Forge
Dwarf Fortress
I can't speak for the others, actually I can, Mechwarrior 4 and Dwarf fortress are free, but System Shock 1 and 2 are not free. The rights are still held by Irrational Games and EA and they still seek to exercise those rights. Unless you can buy an old second hand physical copy of the games you are pirating them. Irrational themselves have said time and time again that the System Shock games are not abandonware.

OT: On GOG you can pick Underneath a Steel Sky for free, it is a point and click cyberpunk adventure game worth playing.

'Been downloading a lot of free games lately and I like to have fun without spending a dime without being ilegal.

Here's some games I've been playing lately:

Age of Conan (one of the better MMOs I've ever played IMO)
League of Legends
Heroes of Newerth
Champions Online
Dungeons & Dragons Online
Lord of The Rings Online
Spiral Knights (kinda like a mix between Zelda: A Link To the Past and Diablo)
Everquest 2 Extended
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (the FPS that got me into PC gaming and the first FPS I've ever played online, still an amazing game)
Quake Live

Over 1800 titles separated by genre.
I'm sure it's way better than my crappy list...

I'm gonna join the rebels and say a flash game, but its a recent one that I ended up beating.

Kingdom Rush on Armor Games

Its another tower defense, however, its presented very well and has a lot of interesting content. There are units as well, so it feels a bit like a RTS.

League of Legends is a free to play game based off of the popular mod for Warcraft 3 call Defense of the Ancients, or just DotA for short.

Its like an RTS, but you only get one unit, if that makes any sense
just look it up, I find it hard to generally describe
It also has a community like an ass (just like every other MOBA game out there) and a learning curve of a brick wall. Don't get me wrong, it's fun when you do learn it (And LoL probably gives you the best chances to do so, out of the big three), but for the first few months you are going to suck and everyone in the world is going to remind you of that fact.

If you like RTS games then "Battleships Forever" is pretty good, and if you really like challenges then it's predecessor ("Warning Forever") might also be worth a look.
