I was wondering if anyone had stumbled across good, free games. Be they good browser games or games free for download put forward you free game. Maybe include a description in brief?

I will put forward Battlefield Heroes:It's a fun little over the shoulder type game that EA (thunder in background) released to get in on the free gaming trend a year or two ago. Three classes, one is a sniper and is sneaky, one is a soldier who can heal, the other is a gunner, big gun shield effect etc... The different classes have different weapons and abilities as you would expect. The game does have a paying component in which you can buy outfits that don't affect combat or pay money to buy guns that others would have to use the in game currency to buy.

and

Nexon: It's not a game, it's a company and puts out a couple free games that aren't half bad in my opinion.

So, for gamers on a budget what are your recommended free games?

Edit: Saying Portal does not make you clever.

I've been enjoying playing "TrackMania Nations Forever" from Steam. I got it when I got Portal, and actually play it a fair bit.

There's a turn-based strategy game called Battle for Wesnoth that is actually quite good and free. It even has online multiplayer.

Trackmania is alright but that's about all I can think of at the moment.

In before Runescape or Combat Arms those don't count as good

Rumble Fighter, an online fighting game, is a pretty ok game. It kinda looks like Power Stone for the Dreamcast, and 8 people can fight each other at once. Character customization is pretty deep too, but alot of the good items cost real money.

Grand Chase is somewhat fun. It's a sort-of arcade/RPG. It is fun trying out the characters in the training mode, as well.

Also, Kongregate is a good website for free games. It's been mentioned on the weekly article about online games here on the Escapist.

Remnants of Skystone is an arguably brilliant platformer with some RPG elements. It follows a storyline about various factions of humanity uniting against the threat posed by a horde of creatures called Mimics, which copy the shapes of native species or adapt to the environment for maximum deadliness, often doing both, which thrive in the poisonous Haze. You can play as a Victorian-styled character that utilizes a steam jetpack and "blaster cuffs" that fire bursts of steam in a long-range attack(the game is all about steampunk-ish stuff), a Wild-West cowboy-style character that uses a grappling hook and mid-range flail attack, or a tribal/Gypsy-style character that uses giant bird beaks that have been reinforced and tipped with sharp steel to climb and perform close-range attacks. There are quests, levels, stats, etc. in the RPG elemenmt area, but the main game is in the platforming and combat. There is a membership component, and a real-money-to-in-game-currency conversion, but just the free game is amazing, and it's still being added to by the developers. It also has some co-op missions, but these are not exactly the best thing ever. Most people who don't like it consider it too grindy, which is your warning.

Also, a lot of the games that get put up in Alt+Escape are pretty good.

Edit: forgot to mention, it's a Kongregate exclusive, and the "real-to-game money" conversion requires Kreds, not dollars/euro/whatever.

I've been playing Yahtzee's 'Chzo Mythos' series, and it's really good.
There's 4 in the series, and they're in playing order:

1. 5 Days a Stranger: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days/
2. 7 Days a Skeptic: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/7days/
3. Trilby's Notes: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/notes/
4. 6 Days a Sacrifice: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/6days/

Quake Live - It's fun, although if you aren't that good with fast-paced first person shooters expect to get owned a bit.

Dwarf Fortress - This is a FANTASTIC game with TONS of depth, it is in ASCII though so if you are looking for graphics this ain't the place. It's about you controlling a bunch of dwarfs and helping them live, go fishing, building their fortress, hunting animals, getting pets etc. As I said it's really really in depth, if there's any game you are going to dedicate your life to this is it. http://bay12games.com/dwarves/

Portal - Drool.

The demo versions Spiderweb Software's RPG's have a hefty chunk of content. Not counting the Exile series, or other games that won't run on Windows Vista, they've got about 13 RPG demos available for download. The demo for Avernum 6 contains a tenth of the entire game. Each of the other RPG's will let you go through a few dungeons and explore a good chunk of the overworld before you have to get the full game.

Dungeon Fighter Online is an online co-op beat-em-up/Action RPG that has a lot of flaws, but is worth checking out.

The only "Free games" I'm aware of are the casual flash-based ones liek Fairway Solitaire.

Oh wait! Steam is giving PORTAL away for free, if you don't already own it.

Oh! & there's some free stuff on GameTap too. I dont remember if Serious Sam 2 was free or not. It's probably the funniest shooter ever.
