I use FRAPs myself, but then I payed the small fee a couple years ago and got a legit full version so I've no clue how other video capture software works nor how good they are.

Easy. Open it up, should be somewhere in your start menu, then go to this page:
Find out what the video capture hotkey is, then whenever fraps is running
(Minimize, don't close it!) hitting that key once will start recording, and hitting it a second time will stop. Video will be saved to wherever you chose them to be. You'll likely be able to tell when FRAPS is recording by a dip in your computers framerate as it's a bit of a hog to run at the same time as a game, although the high-quality video is worth it.
As I recall free FRAPS has a time limit for video and also watermarks em, keep that in mind as well!
