There are a lot of free multilayer online games out there and I just want to start a topic about these games (even though this may have come up before).

There are some good shooters out there, like Gunz Online and Soldier's Front. I just can't find a unique MORPG. Requiem and RFonline are the only two that stand out to me.

Urban Dead is a good laugh to play from our browser. It's only a half an hour a day type thing but I enjoyed it for a while. Haven't played for a year or so but I expect it's still cool.

There shutting down RF online servers soon. It wasnt that good anyways another generic korean grindfest mixed with a aspect of if you win this tiny battle you get the ability to go afk for a couple hours. Its like they mixed it with Eve.

Guild Wars is free, if you care.
I care, that game rocked for the first year...crap after realizing everything you have been doing is pointless.

Like most MMO's to be honest, and life in general.

Gunz Online is good if you have the patience to master the glitches in the game. I actually enjoyed it until I started going up against the really hardcore crowd.

I used to play a free MMORPG called "Fly For Fun (FlyFF)". The classes were sortof neat and the part where you get to fly around on snowboards and brooms is fun-- but everything else is pretty generic and grind-intensive.

As far as online games go, I've found that you pretty much always get what you paid for.

I'm a big fan of Lineage 1, and I've found a free private server at friskycow.com

I'd highly recommend either of the servers on that site. It's based on old DnD mechanics, 2D isometric view, and it's oddly fun.

Granado Espada: Sword of the New World is free to play, it does have a micro-transaction model though, not sure if that puts you off. It's also pretty unique in the way that you control a team of up to three characters at any one time instead of just a single character.

Gunz is shit. Or should I say, Gunz is shit NOW. Gunz had potential to be epic, and it was epic at first, but it all went down the drain and into a big steaming pile of shit from the moment the developers thought glitches were better than their original gameplay... Talk about confidence issues. The whole "k-style" bullshit, it's just having a seizure on your keyboard to abuse glitches. It's pretty easy to beat but it's so annoying and... Immature really... It's like having a fight with a handicap child with Parkinson's... Pretty easy to beat, but winning makes you feel worst than not playing at all...

Recent good and free MMOs... Well... It depends on how grind friendly you are. I found this one recently that seems really good, S4 League, unfortunately it's run by an incompetent company and their community has an average IQ that rivals that of a rotten tangerine... Not a fresh tangerine mind you, that would totally kick their ass, a rotten one, way past it's half-life.

If the company shapes us and fixes what they should, it looks really good. Third person shooter, good gameplay that's based on hit detection and hit boxes and not the lame ass "hit check" most MMOs nowadays seem to love. It's grind free too(if they fix the minor issues they have).

Another one that seems interesting, but still in closed beta I believe, is Jumpgate Evolution. Basically a Freelancer online, and if you played freelancer online you know it's made of so much win you get a wingasm, but let's see what they do with Jumpgate...

Other than that, no. Every other MMO I've seen out now is either a generic grind-fest or a sub-par FPS. So it seems most MMO developers these days only make themselves one question: Are we going to try to rip off World of Warcraft or Counter Strike?

I tried a lot of free MMORPGs until I got sick of the grind and lack of story.

If it counts, I loved Kingdom of Loathing best. I also enjoyed Silkroad. Absolutely beautiful game.

I.... am very shame-faced to admit that I enjoyed Tales of Pirates for a good month and a half. VERY cute and fun to play with friends.

Don't play anything by Aeria. All of it is crap. Their games need about five more servers each. I didn't play any of them long enough to get a feel for them, but they seemed to take especially long to level up in. I mean, even for a free MMORPG.

What else... I played Crazy Tao and enjoyed that in a kind of mindless way. I've heard nothing but praise for Dream of Mirror Online, which puts an unusual amount of focus into player relations, which is interesting.

For more info, I'd head to onrpg.com. They have a lot of info on their forums.

Hope this helps.
