Free Password Manager Software

Does anyone use some kind of password manager software? I'm looking to start using some because the number of passwords and logins I have to remember is just getting out of control. I also have been getting some erroneous emails about some accounts requesting new passwords that I did not make, etc...

so in having so frequently change my PWs it makes it hard to remember them all. I'm mainly looking for something that is free but i'm not sure what to get. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using FireFox? It has a master password setting in "Options" under the "Security" icon. Other than that I don't have any other suggestions.

Write them down or have Firefox remember them. I just have Firefox remember everything for me. also just report the weird emails as spam and be done with them.

but seriousl how many passwords/usernames do you have? i would suggest some memory increasing tehniques. but if your on firefox it remembers passwords for you. could you also not just write your passwords down on a piece of paper?

I use chrome. Also the emails are not spam. For instance, I had an email from battle.net saying I had sent a "forgot password" request. But I had not done so...

Alright then. Type them down in a Word Document, print it out, and keep THAT safe.

Yeah, if your passwords aren't on the computer, there's no risk of them being stolen by someone you don't know (unless they break into your house). Anyone who might look around near your computer for the sheet with them on would be unlikely to do any damage more permanent than 'Belvadier has changed his Interested In to Men'.

Write it out multiple times.
Or get a labelmaker and just stick them to the inside of your closet door, or something.

If you use Windows, I would highly recommend Password Safe [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_Safe]. It's got a pretty navigable user interface, and does not open without a password. Thus, you only really need to remember two passwords: the one to your user account on the computer, and the password to your Password Safe. From there, you can copy passwords, keep track of usernames, or what information you've given to different sites.

It also has a password generator capability which can make ridiculous passwords [ie, 20 char length, uses caps, numbers, special characters] randomly. With those passwords it doesn't matter if you remember them or not -- you've got Password Safe to keep them straight.

If you google "Password Safe" you'll likely get the right download link [depending on your Google results -- it comes up as the first result for me], which I did not include in this post. Did I mention it's completely free? No? Well, it's free, and open source.

Please note: if you do decide to use Password Safe, when you've copied a password do not minimize your Password Safe window until you've pasted it into the required password field. Once you minimize Password Safe, it'll clear your clipboard on you, as extra prevention to keep you from accidentally pasting your password somewhere undesirable.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for and this was very helpful. I appreciate the sentiment everyone who posted "write them down" but that wasn't really what I was after.

Keepass is the absolute shit. If anyone does use it make sure you actually read what is says or you can find yourself locked out of your database with NO WAY to get back into it.
