avast! and AVG have free versions that are pretty good, I'd look into those...

actually, there's a free one from Norton that's supposed to be one of the best free AVs, but i can't recall the name.

Avast! Has served me well, and it makes you think your PC is being protected by Pirates. Though they're the last people I would want looking after my stuff.

Get Avast! and Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and never pay for antivirus programs again. I've tried several and these are the best. Alternatively AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials are pretty good too, just don't ever go with Norton or McAfee.

I use Avast and I have Malwarebytes to get what slips through. Last virus I had I got rid of in 5 minutes. A female friend of mine got the same virus and knew nothing about computers so she reverted to factory defaults. I have never before done a facepalm of the sheer magnitude I did that day.

Avast! cleared up my home pc nicely after mafee officially decided to give in, it also auto updates its definitions database everyday when you have an internet connection

I've used Avast for years and it's fantastic. Blocks tons of crap and is pretty damned good at removing stuff that slips through. Combined with malwarebytes and you have some really, really strong defenses in place.

I'm actually thinking about getting a corporate license for the PCs at work to use avast because i've been so happy with their free home product.

I use Malwarebytes.

It doesn't run all the time, which I love. So, what I do is just pay close attention to my computer. If I notice it running slow or acting strange, I run a scan.

Most people I know are too lazy or don't know what to pay attention to, so I suggest AVG free to them.

I also have a rule of thumb which is - don't get infected. I haven't had a virus in about ten years. Don't use pirated software, don't open any email attachments, use gmail or some other web-based client, or if not, use a plain-text reader, be sensible with your USB drives and really, there's no reason to get an infection.

You do need to use a firewall, though!

Right now, I'm running the free version of avast!, IO Bit Security 360 (or something like that), and Microsoft Security Essentials. I haven't really had any problems with viruses since I got the programs running. I've had bad experiences with AVG and Avira AntiVir though.

I use Avast! and Ad-aware, I find Ad-aware easier to use so you could call it my main.

I run Avast, Spyware S&D, and keep the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner on hand for the uber nasty viruses that dig in deep. I've had 2 or 3 real nasty ones slip through over the years so I'd look up an executable called "rkill.exe" and keep it around as your fail safe.

-EDIT-
Here's a good explanation of what Rkill does in case you're curious.
