Someone already mentioned them, but anything by Yahtzee [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm] is almost guaranteed to be good. Also, try The Way [http://www.crestfallen.us/], a series of free RPGs that should keep you going for a while.

Other decent freeware games I've encountered include Legend of Princess [http://www.konjak.org/], the Ben Jordan series [http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=760] and and the Merlin trilogy [http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=204].

Many people already mentioned things I was going to say (Soldat, ET, Nexuiz, AssaultCube...)

I think Tribes 1 and 2 are freeware now.
It's really an incredible game.

I enjoyed Trillby: The Art of Theft, and while not really freeware, "World of Goo" is about 20 bucks for a download, I haven't regretted it.
I downloaded N, and that held my attention for a little while, if for no other reason than it's so mind-bendingly difficult.

I loved ET. Wonderful game.
You may have to be careful with your acronyms there; that can be a little too easily quoted out of context.
Haha, good catch. I'll be more careful in the future.

I'm also a fan of Rogue based games like Nethack. Mind you I was never any good at Nethack, nor could I ever remember the controls, but it was fun.

You should try Ur-Quan Masters, if you´re familiar with Star Control. Simply great. Would also have liked to recommend Space Hulk (2008 board game -to-PC conversion), but since the developers had to remove it from their site due to juridical obstacles, it´s currently unavailable.

If your looking for a freeware MMORPG, Anarchy Online is free now. Its complicated, but once you get into it its a very deep MMO with a great community and lots to do.

Also, I remember Far Cry going Freeware, Im not sure if it still is.
