Hiya escapists.

I'm trying to learn French, and it is hard. I think it would help if I was exposed to it more; because in daily life I nearly never encounter the language.

So what I'm asking of you is to recommend me some French music, movies, comics, books. Anything that I would normally find interesting, that just happens to be in French.

I am primarily thinking of French music, since that would be the easiest to get a hold of.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I realize I can just read books that are translated into French as well; and I probably should. I just feel more comfortable if French is the original language.

For films check out the `Three Colours' trilogy and `Hidden'. As far as music goes you can't go far wrong with Edith Piaf (and you may as well watch `La Vie en Rose' as well). I haven't read many books in French, but I did find `L'Étranger' to be easy to read.

Edit: You could also listen to Bizet's `Carmen'.

French books: Get the original language versions of Les Miserables, The Phantom Of The Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

French music: Hmmm, sorry, can't really help you there. Aside from the entire score for the French-Canadian musical version of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Notre-Dame de Paris. Here's just one of the songs from that musical, that I absolutely love:

French Comics: Asterix. I rest my case.

French Movies: Amelie, and La Vie En Rose. Also, Jeux d'Enfants (English title is 'Love Me If You Dare'). Those are films I cannot recommend enough to you :D.

Asterix and Obelix comics. I learnt some great words from there when my mum read them to me when I was a kid, for example:

une marmite - a cauldron

Let me quote P.J. O'Rourke:

"Sounds like someone chasing Edith Piaf around the old Peppermint Lounge with an electric hedge trimmer."

Modern French music, or the old stuff, that is?

Their pop is just like American stuff if it were performed by amateurs, their dance music is as described above.

I suppose you could listen to Edith Piaf, if that's the kind of person you want to be.
