Well, as far as practical and realistic depiction... I've always thought that Starfury from Babylon 5 was fairly well done. But I'm not one to nitpick unimportant details, and I'm a fan of the A-Wing personally because in the X-Wing series I'm freaking untouchable in one.
But that's coming from someone who firmly believes there is no such thing as a "plot hole" in fiction. Because any such "plot hole" can be easily explained as "that's what happened in the universe that the author created, that's how it works there." Or the author can give the Xena explanation "any time you notice something like that... a wizard did it."
