Firstly, I should clarify what I mean by "internet cartoon," because it seems there's a very big difference between such and the slightly more prolific "webcomic" that is so frequently seen roaming the online world. Internet cartoons are a series of little cartoonishly done movie clips, usually done with Flash animation, whereas webcomics are comic strips, sometimes drawn by hand, often employing Photoshop or a judicious combination of both; and of course they are published on the "internet" and the "web," respectively. "[a href="http://www.drmcninja.com"]The Adventures of Doctor McNinja[/a]" is a webcomic; "[a href="http://www.homestarrunner.com"]Homestar Runner[/a]" is an internet cartoon.

Which allows me to segue on to my big question: I'm thinking of setting up an internet cartoon of my own in the near/semi-distant future called "Krazytown," set in the (fictional) southern town of the same name and which would focus largely on the life and times of a reality-bending hippie who recently came out of hibernation, a local convenience store owner, a militant hobo and a trio of college students who've come from distant lands to study abroad in the titular locale's sole university. Also involved would be the ongoing struggle between the town's inhabitants and the armies of hillbillies to the east threatening to overrun it (hoboes, hippies, hillbillies, we've got 'em all), conflicts and tension of various kinds caused by the local mafia, and copious amounts of gunfire.

Mostly, I'm wondering how much money I'll need to get this operation off the ground. I'll probably need Flash, Photoshop, some sort of music-making software, an audio recorder, et cetera, et cetera; at the moment, I have, uh, NotePad and MS Paint. Yeah.

So, starting from scratch: what's the cheapest/best way I can get all of these things, plus anything else I might have forgotten, and about how much might it cost? Advice, encouragement, and credit card numbers to offshore bank accounts will all be greatly appreciated.

I bring encouragement!

...What? You were expecting useful advice? From ME?

Um...ask the mafia to fund your cartoon? Without it, they wouldn't exist after all!

Wait, that may cause a problem.

Anyway, good luck with your cartoon. May it spread "epic lulz" across the internets.

Sounds good.. Why not start just panel comics and move on from there? See if people like the story ideas and then, if/when they do, splurge on the extra stuff to make it animated.

Contact people with money? I dunno.. Maybe you should ask other people with internet cartoons about how they started...

Worth a try, I s'pose, although it'd probably end up looking something like xkcd before long. Colon and backslash.

I'm not very well accustomed to the principles of panel cartoons. Pseudo-live action seems to me like it would flow a little better for what I'm trying to design. I will give it some thought, though. Thanks, guys.
