Generally speaking, and I?m sure most of you will agree, movies derived from video games tend to suck. There are a million and one reasons why this concept just doesn?t work; some games have very little in the form of plot, so the writers/producers/directors take liberties in order to shoehorn in not only elements from the original story but things they want/feel necessary to include(i.e. out of place romance subplots, ulterior motives for protagonists/antagonists etc), or actors they want that can?t perform the role properly or are just not right for the role or just can?t act in general, and one that I think is a real killer, trying to condense 8-30 hours of game play and story/character development into 90 minutes.

So why not try turning games into an episodic TV series, where the story can unfold at a more natural pace, characters can develop freely over a period of time, back stories and events can be fleshed out in full. Hell, games have become a lot more episodic in nature, with the current DLC trend, sequels released yearly/bi-yearly. One would think that it would be a more sensible choice to convert a popular game to the small screen rather than the silver screen, if they cared for the original story more than the opening weekend takings that is.

So what do you guys think, would/could it be a good idea? Would/could it work? Would you be more inclined to watch a series based on a game over a movie counterpart? What games do you think would perform well as a TV series? Hell, if you feel like it, write up a small synopsis of your game to TV idea.

Actually, that might work a lot better than a movie. TV shows get about 3/4 an hr every week and about 30 new episodes every year. So that is more than enough time to develop the characters at a pace they are developed in the games. Dragon age might make a good one...

Now we just need to find a studio that will make them...

Seems like a good idea, but it may lead to poor versions as companies won't be willing to put up as much money for them. Plus you might get some really boring episodes.

But overall the idea seems better than making a movie about a game.

"In today's episode, our hero spends 4 (condensed into 1) hours doing courier quests!"
"Today, our hero grinds trash mobs!"

seriously, though, i do agree episodic format would probably be better than another Uwe Boll crapterpiece.
