Help me, Escapist.

I might be looking for the impossible, there is a small voice in my head that says I might be asking for too much.
But here it is anyway.

I'm looking for a game, in which you grow from a bunch of hoity-toity cavemen all the way to modern day soldiers or even off in the future.

I hear you think, "Ranorak, you silly goose, what you just described is civilization."
Yes... and no.

I too, thought that civilization was the game I wanted, so I went and got civilization IV.
But I was disappointed with the combat. It seems that there was some randomness involved, and my tanks got owned by savage spear men. overall, I found that particular game.... too shallow for what I think I'm looking for.

So, please toss me some suggestions.
It doesn't have to be a RTS.

Edit: Scratch that, you want combat of some type... What is that new diablo esque game thats coming out that uses the spore creature creator?

I think I may be the third, but I gotta say maybe Spore is what you're looking for. And maybe pop in DoW everytime you want to shoot something

Civilization V is fixing that problem with the combat you described, so if you feel like laying down 50 bucks at the end of the month then that might be for you.

And the only other game I can think of is Spore, but no one ever really liked it that much, so I dunno.

I have to agree with imnotparanoid and say Empire Earth would be a good choice. The first one though. The second one isn't as good and the third is just plain terrible.

Also, I'll also advocate Spore, it's fun.

Oh, quick responses.
I do own spore, but it was a bit shallow for my taste. Not bad per see, But I I'm aiming for a bit more micro management. So to speak.

I'll look into Civ III, V and Empire Earth.

As already said, Civ V is making the game more tactically sound, infantry win firefights, tanks win battles, so on and so forth.

Empire Earth is also good, though I may be speaking mostly from nostalgia, don't get the third one, and apparently the second is considered the pinnacle of the series.

Rise of Nations. It's an age of empires-ish game, where you start at medieval settlers, and go all the way to modern superpowers. It's not quite what you described, but it's closer (and better) than Spore in my opinion.

Age of War, on addictinggames.com
Probably not as much micro management as you're requesting, but, it goes from cavemen to space marines and it's free. :p

EDIT: I think there might also be a sequel, Age of War 2, but I don't feel like looking.

Rise of Nations, and Empire Earth are both RTS games that fit the bill. The first two are fine, but for the love of god do not touch Empire Earth 3. Seriously, the developers fucked up big time.
