Review
'From Paris With Love' is a fast paced action thriller staring the talents of John Travolta and Johnathan Rhys Meyers as they hunt down drug dealers, and terrorists while carrying a vase full of cocaine.
The plot is fairly basic and simple to follow, Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays James Reece, a minor secret agent who is shown to be the 'thinking' type of secret agent, always doing things by the book. However, despite doing his job well he has yet to join the ranks of the 'real' secret agents and most of his agent duties involves him working for an American diplomat at the American Embassy, switching license plates and planting bugs. He also has a wonderful girlfriend who makes clothing out of different fabrics. One day, he gets a call being told he's finally got the chance to get a foot into the 'big leagues'. All he has to do is drive agent Charlie Wax (Travolta) around on his new assignment and after words he will be promoted. Charlie Wax, obviously, turns out to be Reece's opposite in every way. Rude, obnoxious, trigger happy and impulsive, Wax has his own way of doing things that always insure that the job gets done.
Both Mr. Meyers and the supporting cast do a good job in there respective roles, but John Travolta steals the show with the outrageous attitude of Charlie Wax with his over-the-top style of acting, and yet it seems to work strangely well as long as you're not hoping for anything to serious from this movie. As stated earlier, mister Meyers does a good job acting however at times he can appear to be a bit stiff but this is mostly a minor pick at his overall acting. The dialouge between the two characters is what you'd expect in this kind of movie, with Travolta's character providing most of the witty lines while Meyers spends his time saying typical 'Good cop' lines about following protocol and such.
The action scenes themselves are very over-the-top, with duel wielding machine guns and explosions throughout and very little downtime overall. The action never seems to get dry, with the two agents battling it out in a variety of different locations. The only problem being that despite the name, the film doesn't seem to take much advantage of the city in which the movie is both filmed and based in. Yes, the filming is done in Paris, but most of the locations don't seem to take the chance to show off some of Paris's more unique architecture, other than a scene with the Eiffel Tower and a few shots of it in the background. Oh, and so people speak French and there is French songs on the radio, but it just didn't feel like Paris.
An enjoyable action flick overall, I'd definitely recommend seeing it. Good action and good laughs await.
Final Statement
If you enjoy action flicks, witty dialogue and John Travolta you have to see this movie.
