Frozen 2 Confirmed

Disney has confirmed that Frozen 2 is in development.

It was pretty inevitable, but now it's official: Frozen 2 is in development. Rumors have been circulating about the project for this adorable Tweet [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138824-Idina-Menzel-Claims-Frozen-2-is-in-The-Works], and the image you can see to the right.

"After months of speculation, Bob Iger, John Lasseter and actor Josh Gad (voice of Olaf) announced from the stage that Frozen 2 is officially in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios," Disney said in a statement [https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/blog/big-frozen-and-star-wars-news-disney%E2%80%99s-annual-meeting-shareholders]. "The film will reunite the Oscar-winning filmmaking team behind Frozen, including director Chris Buck, director/writer Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho. A release date and production details are yet to be announced."

As for what the second film will revolve around, well, the ending of the first movie was rather definitive, but that hasn't stopped Disney before [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_King_II:_Simba's_Pride]. Given the global popularity of the franchise, we can probably assume that this one won't be going direct-to-dvd.

Frozen became the highest grossing animated film of all-time [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-27585310] last year, and is the fifth biggest film in box office history, behind Avatar, Titanic, The Avengers and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.

Another completely unnecessary Disney sequel.
Frozen has completed it's story arc. Anything after that is just going to be like the matrix sequels. Completely pointless where it is not actively detracting from the original.
Disney just... LET IT GO!

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I suppose it will be time to see if disney can not fuck up a sequel. I can't remember any of their animated movies that didn't get bad sequels, pixar stuff doesn't count. Actually I think there was one sequel they did that was good but I can't remember it right now.

Everybody acting so surprised... why? What was the last big Disney hit that didn't get a sequel?

Wreck-it Ralph and Rapunzel for starters. Both where pretty big hits, even if not nearly as much as Frozen (guess quality doesn't go hand in hand with quantity now does it?).

I heard about this earlier today.

Welp, you can't blame them for wanting to go back to their biggest cash-cow in decades to see if it's got enough for another few squirts. Money is money, after all.

But yeah, I'm with the general concensus (thus far) on this one...I don't really see how this could possibly be better than - or even hope to match - the lightning-in-a-bottle that was the original movie. Then again, this is coming from someone who didn't think the first one was God's Gift to Animated Movies that the majority of people seemed to think it was. It was decent, did indeed have that one particularly catchy tune, but I've gotta say I felt the story was a rather contrived starting at the very beginning when the parents take Anna to the trolls for some healing.

All that said, I'm sure it's name alone will ensure that this movie does well at the box office. But just because you can put butts into theater seats doesn't necessarily mean that people will enjoy the show. Maybe it's the cynic in me talking, but I just can't help but feel there's going to be a lot of "wasn't as good as the first one" being uttered as people file out of the theater.

We'll see. Plenty of great movies that had a complete arc got great sequels: Toy Story 2, Terminator 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Aliens, etc.

We'll have to wait and see.

Ah yes, right before they died...because Disney has to fill their "dead parents" quota for children's movies.

But yeah, I have to agree with the majority of posts so far. It was an enjoyable movie and all, but it doesn't need a sequel. It was self-contained with all loose ends neatly tied up. But I guess that won't stop them if there's still money to be had.

And what an abrupt way to sweep them from the stage, too. Did they even make it 10 minutes into the movie? Scene 3: "We're going on a trip, everything will be fine." 20 seconds later "YOUR PARENTS ARE DEAD!"

Seriously, when their boat disappeared all I could think was "Huh...well that just happened..."

As long as it has more songs equivalent to Frozen Heart[footnote]The best song to come out of Frozen in general...[/footnote] as well as taking a few pages from Chris's fanfic folder, I'm down to clown for a sequel, I guess...

Other than that, if it truly crosses over with Tangled, then I'll be happy regardless... I mean, everyone needs more smolder in their life...http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqnvl4UABt1qg8k7v.gif
Thank me... and good call on the smolder mention...

Anyway, maybe the sequel will pull a Once Upon a Time and make the claim that Anna and Elsa's parents are (maybe) still alive... and then remix the fuck out of Let it Go because it's relevant to the sequel... I think...

Okay. As long as it's not as terrible as most Disney sequels, I'm on board. I like Frozen. I'm going to see the Cinderella movie mainly to see the new short they have.

I was fully aware that there was absolutely zero chance of Disney NOT doing a sequel (dollah dollah bills y'all) so I'm not surprised by this. I loved the first movie, they hooked me right from the beginning song and by the middle of "Do you wanna build a snowman" I was already bawling like a little girl. I'm a sucker for these things, really. Although I quite disliked Olaf but I'm not really the target demographic so can't complain much.

And if it sucks I'll just rewatch Tangled again and that'll make it all okay.

Makes me glad Tangled wasn't as much of a critical darling and marketing succes, so they at least left that alone. I didn't like the first Frozen anyway, so they can go and milk its udders into oblivion for all I care.

The only Disney animated film who's sequel has got a theatrical release is Rescuers 2. (ignore the DVD only crap different studio)

I frikkin' loved Frozen, and thought it deserved all the praise it got, and then some. I think it's close to being utterly perfect.

...but I still don't want a sequel. The original was about the bond/rift between the sisters, and the expected narrative got a bit of a feminist twist; the former element's been concluded, and they can't surprise an audience with the latter again.

So what the hell Elsa else can they do with these characters?

The only way I can see it going well, is if Disney let Jennifer and co have completely free reign over it, effectively saying 'we're guaranteed a billion dollar global gross - so just push the envelope and do something genuinely interesting and different'.

...but I somehow don't see the machine-like corporation of Disney being able to pull that off.

I love Frozen, and I love sequels. even love Lion King 2. So in general, it's cool with me.

I'm only afraid that they would inevitably end up pairing Elsa up with with a dude.

So will this be a direct to video sequel, a la Return of Jafar, or will it be a full theater release?
