I realize that there have probably been a number of threads about this already, but I'm asking anyway. I am looking for a good free-to-play MMO to have fun with for a while. It doesn't have to be an RPG, as long as it's fun to play with friends and not to hard on the processor or graphics card (my laptop isn't exactly suited to the games I'd like to play on it, which is why I have a console now). I don't mind if there's some content missing to non-paying members, as long as the core game is still enjoyable.

I've (briefly) tried LOTRO and DDO, and LOTRO was much more fun. I can't say why, but I actually enjoyed it, which I didn't with DDO. Since I haven't played much past the first few levels, I don't know if the pay-for-content model gets in the way later or not.

If you're not opposed to Browser based games, DDTank [http://ddtank.aeriagames.com] is a lot of fun. It's essentially pocket tanks in mmo format. pretty easy to get started, and I've been playing it for free for several months now. It's more of a diversionary game rather than a full fledged core-type game, but still rather entertaining.

Actually, most of Aeria's games are fantastic. I beta tested the Shin Megami Tensei and Dynasty Warriors MMOs for Aeria.

Yeah, out of the two I prefer LOTRO. DDO lacks a distinct story thread and is like "this area" "that area" a bit too much to me. Also the main reason I quit DDO is because there's nothing to do in downtime and it really sucks if you can't find decent parties.
Also the newer areas are decent, but the original, free areas I found to be pretty poor.

With LOTRO I haven't maxed out yet, but I've had a bunch of fun so far. I'm subscribed, so don't get the experience of being free now, but I got quite far without subscribing.

Not got any other MMOs that I'd recommend than LOTRO right now. Um, I guess Minecraft's fun, but that's not an MMO lol.

There's also Fiesta, an enjoyable but simple MMORPG. If what you want to do with an MMO is go questing and dance parties with friends, this is a pretty good one.
