So, yeah... Duke Nukem Forever. All said, I still played it, and it's not a revolution, but nor was it as bad as most said it was.
And then I got to the Hive level... and everything went to Hell.
Now, I'm not in any way squeamish. And I've been playing video games since the Spectrum ZX. But the absolute jump from (mostly failed) humor to downright disturbing was jarring. Made even more so because Duke is a bigger prick than I initially thought, wise-cracking as women moan and suffer around him, calling out "I want my daddy" and other cries as they are visibly tortured and raped.
And at this stage, I stopped playing. As previously said, I'm not squeamish. I finished (and loved) "Manhunt", I've played pretty much every controversial game out there, but this, I don't know what it was, if the women suffering, if the alien rape, or Duke's completely ridiculous banter throughout that level, or a combination of it all, it just became too much. I was no longer having fun, I was just disgusted. Yes, Duke's always been controversial, but because of his character, not its graphic and disturbing depiction of torture of young women. It's like dropping a scene from "A Serbian Movie" in the middle of a "Marx Brothers" routine. It doesn't work.
What's you opinion on this, and have you ever experienced something similar?
