Dear Escapists!

This is my first thread btw. Today while taking a shower a thought came to my mind. I'm currently runing my games on Windows XP. According to me, XP is still an awesome OS. I can play everything from thief 2 (Amazing that it works actually)to Dragon Age and MW2.

However, there's one thing that worries me. What about next year? I realize that Windows 7 will be the "custom" OS, but will games still work on XP? Or do you think the gaming companies will put less effort in making their new game compatible with Windows XP?

Please give me your opinions on the subject, what do you think?

Your thread title is very misleading, XP is not todays OS, its yesterdays OS, 7 is the current standard, 7 is TODAYS OS. Of course things will stop working on XP, have fun trying to install some of your games on a 95-98 machine.

It's an inevitability old os compatability will eventualy no longer be a priority for developers, however the beautfiul thing about pcs is you can emulate just about everything once technology makes a big enough leap. DOSBOX for example is far more stable than the old DOS systems ever where.

The Steam survey still says that about a third of people are on XP so you still have some time left. I'd guess that you will be okay next year.

XP's user base is still pretty big, but I think 7 might have killed it a bit. It's bloody 9-years-old though, so I don't know what you're expecting exactly.

To my knowledge, Microsoft plan on supporting XP until 2020 due to general upgrade resistance, and general lack of upgrading in companies.

Fact is, Windows XP does exactly what people want it to do, and will keep doing so for a long time coming. And while there is a market for it, developers will continue to develop for it. The Steam Hardware Survey stats are always interesting to keep an eye on and should start showing a downward trend for Windows XP, but all the time it still holds a significant OS market share, it will still be developed for :)

Well you can't play Dx 11 games, unless the game devs make that scalable (which they're starting not to) then you won't be able to play them on XP.

I think few major in the releases next 2 years won't be playable on XP, then it will be standard.

Honestly? I can see Win 7 overtake XP as the Steam Hardware Most Used OS in the next couple of months. I would imagine that would open the floodgates to DirectX 10+ games. Sorry kiddo, XP's time as a gaming OS is running out.
