G.I. Joe 2 Invades Theaters August 2012

We've known that G.I. Joe was going to get a sequel for a while, but now a release date and cast details have been unveiled.

Let's get this out of the way: <a href=http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Joe-Cobra-Channing-Tatum/dp/B002NXSRVG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1299527692&sr=8-3>G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a dreadful movie. But it was the fun kind of dreadful that you could enjoy with your friends, provided you went into the movie theater with no expectations other than to enjoy what was obviously going to be a terrible revamp of some beloved childhood memories. That said, the movie <a href=http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=gijoe.htm>made an obscene amount of money, which means that it's got a sequel coming out, and Paramount has finally started revealing details about it.

G.I. Joe 2 is scheduled for an August 10, 2012 release date. Box Office Mojo is reporting that "Based on previous reports, it looks like Step Up 3-D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon Chu will be taking over directing responsibilities from Stephen Sommers. While no plot is currently available, Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in the first movie, tweeted earlier that most cast members would not be returning."

Nichols tweet <a href=http://twitter.com/#!/RachelNichols1/status/43488923665702912>reads as follows: "GI JOE 2 News Flash: The only characters to return in the JON CHU directed sequel will be SNAKE EYES, STORM SHADOW, and DUKE..."

So far, this sequel sounds even more delightfully terrible than its predecessor. That said, it'd be kinda weird if Cobra Commander and Destro aren't included as characters in the movie, but I'm not exactly heartbroken that Marlon Wayans won't be returning as Ripcord. Actually, that's a huge understatement: I totally did a happy dance when I heard that news.

Is it wrong that I'm kind of hoping Sgt. Slaughter will make an appearance?

I skim read that at first, and genuinely thought Justin Bieber was going to be involved. 0_0

Looking on the positive side, at least Snake Eyes is still there...

Just wait for the Transformers crossover...

Sucks I was hoping for more of Brendan Fraiser's Flint. I was also hoping for some Scarlet screen time. I wasnt expecting the movie to be that good but after seeing it in theater and eventually buying it. I really came to appreciate it for what it was, G.I. Joe cheesiness and non stop action. It's good old fashioned brainless fun.

Depends on who does the Transformers crossover, if it was the same crew that did the Transformers movies it could be very awesome, left in the hands of anyone else I would say it would be quite terrible.

I will see this movie without a second's thought.

... and by that I mean it is unlikely that I will be doing any thinking at all for the duration of it's runtime.

Sad that Christopher Eccleston and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (wtf, slumming much?) won't be coming back :(

A sequel to a remake of a cartoon designed to sell toys? Filmed by the directer of the latest cash in of the current pop music obsession? If this isn't a recipe for cinematic excellence I don't know what is!

I liked the first movie, but that was mainly because Stephen Sommers is the king at making highly entertaining crap. This sequel sounds like it's going to be actual crap, the kind that's usually followed by a flushing noise.

And what was so bad about the first one. It was easily watchable and a fun fest. What more do you expect from an action movie? If you want a story go watch Pride and Prejudice!

The fact that the story and dialogue were atrocious was my major problem with it. Oh, and the fact that it had Marlon Wayans in it.

Marlon Wayans in anything is not a good sign. *cough cough* White Chicks. Terrible film.

I loved G.I. Joe- it had exactly the anarchic-yet-family-friendly action fun nonsense that should have defined the Transformers films (which, although worse, made massively more cash- odd, no?). I didn't mind Mr Wayans as Ripcord but will miss Brendan Fraser as, according to the credits, "Sergeant Savage", Sergeant Slaughter apparently being copyrighted.

I guess G.I. Joe is an american thing, i'd never heard of it until this movie came out. Also, that seems like a terrible director to give the movie, simply horrible.

I watched G.I. Joe for the first time a few months ago, with no prior knowledge of the series. For the first 5 minutes or so, I was bored. Then the Ninja started jumping around, and I was sold on the franchise.

You know, I remember action movies in the 80s and 90s with atrocious and cheesy dialogue in them. Yet they had this sort of charm that cheesy modern movies simply can't capture...

The script was bad, acting was wooden, effects were cheap and the director barely knew what he was doing.

I found it an interesting watch, I still do everytime I watch it.
