There was this ridiculous cheap controller for Playstation 1, that broke my Playstation and someone else's. I don't know what the deal was.. it must have shorted something immediately when plugged in.
What happened is you couldn't use any other controller aside from that specific one, and it completely ruined the ability to save or use any memory card whatsoever. It came from K-Mart.. and we simply called it the K-Mart controller. It was an obscure brand I think. It tempted us with it's very cheap price... woe is us.
This happened early in the PS1's lifetime for me, so I played pretty much everything without saves. Games were scary then. A lot of games didn't even have a continue when you died. It was just.. "You are dead", game-over.
