Great question. That's been on my mind recently too, I've started going back to games I played 10 years ago trying to recapture the magic (or whatever you want to call it) games like Planescape:Torment, Baldurs gate, I even reinstalled the original half life.Daymo said:
I mostly went the nostalgia route as I'd sunk so much time into MMOs, and 'long' games like Anno, Skyrim, Mount and blade, X-3 etc, that I pretty much played them to death so can't even fathom playing them again.
For what it's worth, the old games I'm replaying I felt similar feelings at the time to the games I've given up on now, and it's fantastic! I may know the storylines and the mechanics come back fast, but it's fun and I can remember how much I loved the old games.
So just give it a while and you'll want to play the games you were so fond of again. I fully expect to go back to the games I've listed above and approach them with the same joy I'm having atm with BG2 (except for those fecking liches, hate those guys)

I just seem to have burnt out on games. I still enjoy watching Let's Plays, but apart from gaming sessions with friends I don't really play games anymore.
Perhaps it's due a little bit with being depressed over some recent events (and if that's the case, it'll swing around in a short time, since everything turned out okay.)
But it seems anything gaming related I do is merely background noise for other things. I'll play a match or two of LoL, or play Perfect Dark with friends of mine, but I don't find those things fun unless it's just a background activity.
It could also just be the fact that I'm becoming less of a shut-in and would actually be around other people, even if I am very socially awkward.

Been playing LOTRO almost daily for the past three years, but recently I've gotten really burned out. The reasons are plenty though. New expansion was really lacking(they've all been fairly disappointing since the first one imo), and the onl thing they threw in to keep us busy was dailies. Five a day for ~50 days to gear up your character and rebuild a city. I did it with two chars at the same time, as well as a third for gear, due to hope of there being a second age symbol(to make great weapons) at the end... but nope! Just two worthless titles and being able to buy gear for your alts.
There was also a war-steed raid you could do daily, and was comfirmed to drop those second age symbols. I did it every fucking day with my three max leveled characters for at least 40 days until I gave up. Not a single symbol.
They gave us three new, short instances a while ago, and a scaled raid, but the fun in that didn't last long either. Three short raids and a(supposedly) bigger instance is coming soon, though I'm not sure I can be arsed to go back for that. Haven't played for a month and I'm not missing it one bit. Took my new spare time to play through old games I never completed when I was young(FFIX done so far, started with FFX and X-2 and will get through FFVII after that!).
Regret leaving a friend behind though. I usually do switch MMOs after a few months. It was because of him I managed to stay with LOTRO for so long.

There is nothing I can just go back to time and time again and just keep playing. After a couple of months I'll burn out on anything. There's just not that much to most games, especially modern games that want you to play the f***ing multiplayer 1,000,000 times for its replay value.
I do go back to things sometimes, but even then I'll maybe half play it, or mod the shit out of it and then play it. Otherwise... I've done it before, why do I need to do it again?

As sad as I am to admit it, I burnt out on Guild Wars 2 a few weeks back. It was all I was playing, and all I thought about. And then, poof, I just couldn't be bothered anymore. I guess the bright spot in this is that if I want I can go back to it at a later date.

After playing Animal Crossing practically every single day for something like 7 years (seriously, I probably missed a grand total of 3 days), one day I just... stopped. Haven't played it in years. But, with New Leaf looking to be a real upgrade of the franchise, I know I'll become addicted again as soon as it's released here.
I burned out enough with Fallout 3 when it came out that I didn't play any of the dlc or New Vegas. Still don't want to play New Vegas because of it.
Another game I burned out on is Recettear. The game is good in short sittings but I played too much of it in a short span of time and now I have no interest in completing the dungeons or even looking at the game really.

I haven't stopped buying games or getting excited about new ones that are coming out. But once I get them home, they just sit there on the shelf mocking me.
It seems like far too much effort to boot up the tv/console, so any games I do play tend to be on PC these days (which is right next to my bed).
But even then, I seem to be ignoring all of the games that I really wanted to play when I bought them in favour of games that don't take much thought or energy - last week all I was playing was old MSDOS games like Commander Keen or Duke Nukem 1.
This week I'm trapped in a Harvest Moon shame spiral.
Maybe I need a holiday.

Well, here are the rules:
1. Don't talk to any character for longer than two minutes. After that their cardboardiness and horrible writing starts showing.
2. Don't quick-travel, it kills world exploration.
3. Don't focus on finishing quests, but on the journey and role-playing your character.
Got burnt out on Fighting games after the SNES and PS1 era I played a few in the PS2 era but not really that much its only recently I have started to enjoy and play a lot of them again.
Still burnt out on FPS games again I used to play a lot but after Halo 2 I just couldnt play anymore I was done and despite a few dabbles here and there I havent really played them since.
I have also been burnt out on Chess and checkers I know its not a computer game as such but I still cant play them to this day whereas before I couldnt get enough.

I started playing UMVC3 in november 2011 . Played until june , went to a local torunament , lost , then i lost all my motivation to keep playing . I realised i wasn't as good as i though i was . For those of you who don't know , UMVC3 is a fast pace game , and the winner is determined by how game breaking their strategy is and how consistantly they can convert one hit confirm into a Touch of death combo . If you don't have a touch of death combo , you CAN still win, just that the odds are against you . With Touch of death combos / unblockables / infinites , it's a race to find who can do them first to win . Add the X-factor factor , and you can one broken mess of a game . But i'll be damned if it's not fun !
After watching EVO 2012 , i got motivated to get back into it . I want to support the fighting game comunity , unfortunately , i don't have any RL friends to practice with . So i have to stick to online , which is fun , but just isn'tthe same. I got back into it again in october , and i'm trying to find new broken mechanics to level up my game .
I use X-23 / Nova / Strange . I got a touch of death with x-23 . And unblockable with nova and x-23 ( in any order ) and my strange is ass .

The first assassin's creed was one game that kinda burnt me out. While it was really good at the begining, once the game started repeating itself endlessly I just grew tired of it. It was offputting enough I have yet to play another game in the series. Far Cry 2 had the same problem, but the story was compelling enough for me to finish.
Another game that I burned out of was Mass Effect 3, although it was for a different reason. With the release of ME3 on the horizon, I decided to replay 1 and 2 with the DLC (which I hadn't bought prior to this point) to craft my 'perfect' ME character and to also get 100% completion on both games. By the time I achieved this, it was the start of finals, so I had to postpone ME3, playing only the multiplayer (which for the record I enjoyed). I then got through the first couple of missions and stopped. Not because I didn't like the game, but because I was 'sci-fied out', and wanted a change of pace. I've been meaning to go back and finish, but I haven't had the time yet.
