I realise this has probably been done before, but I just can't be bothered to search through loads of earlier pages, so don't start yelling 'SEARCHBAR!' because I will ignore you, and report you if you post nothing else in the thread.

Anyway, I'm about to start playing Rome: Total War after a few weeks of being unable to by dint of my laptop being away for repairs. So, I feel like doing some footage capture and recording gameplay, perhaps to do a 'Let's Play' style thing if I ever manage to afford a decent microphone. Trouble is, I don't know what software is out there to help me.

So, can you guys tell me about any good quality, freeware software for PC that I can use to capture game footage?

Yeah, that's the problem, FRAPS isn't free and I can't really afford anything that actually costs stuff. Really, I just need a free alternative that doesn't suck.

I was in the same position a few years ago. I tried to find a free alternative, but it seems as though there are none, so I just poneyed up the cash for my own copy of FRAPS.

TRUST ME ON THIS. You can get fraps free theres youtube videos on it. So yes I recommend fraps
The methods on youtube gets you a very outdated version of FRAPS that can't record sound, is not very user-friendly, won't work with Directx 10 games (I know Rome Total War is Directx 9), and is not supported on the official FRAPS site (so it seems a little on the sketchy side).
