So I bought the game after it hit the headlines for its neato anti-piracy measures, and because it looked quite fun. Having played for a while now, something has been bugging me, and I think I've isolated it; this game is wearing some seriously jade-coloured glasses.
It reads like a critique of the industry, gamers, and everything else involved in the business. Reviews are meaningless and seemingly arbitrary waffle. Certain things like sequels or trends will be requested and then flop despite conforming to what players supposedly want. Money can flood in, but immediately floods out again on new research and the constant struggle to stay technologically relevant, meaning that however successful a studio is there's no resting on laurels. Games are judged not on their own merit but against past releases.
After looking up the creators on Wikipedia, it appears that Game Dev Tycoon is their first foray into game production, and I'm honestly wondering why their take on it seems so bitter. The impression I've got is that it's a big ol' middle fingers to gamers, the ultimate "well I'd like to see you do any better!" levelled at every complaint ever aimed towards a studio, which I could buy if the creators had had a few years of being kicked around the industry but it's a very cynical attitude from supposed newcomers. Particularly since their mission statement claims that they wanted the game to be "more realistic" than similar games.
Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just reading far too much into things? I'm considering trying to contact Greenheart Games for an interview in the topic, but I'd rather not do so and then discover that nobody else has picked up on it and that the problem is just me sucking at the game.
