I am rather fond of the Halo Franchise, and I greatly appreciate the extended universe that surrounds it. (Well, most of it. That Forerunner book series can rot in hell) The thing that really works for me, though, is that Bungie and Ensemble Studios took the time to make dedicated spinoffs to the main story.

I don't know about you, but I am really worn out on the whole SAVE THE GALAXY FROM THE NEXT IMMINENT THREAT plot device. It was part of the reason that Halo 4 didn't strike a chord with me the same way that the Bungie games did. It felt like a rehash, with a weak justification for having Covvies be bad guys again. But anyways, that's not what I want to talk about.

I want to talk about Spinoffs. The Halo games have had three: ODST, Halo Wars, and Reach. I enjoy these three games more than the rest of the series ('cept for maybe Halo 2 ARBITER FUCK YEAH). I like them because they aren't really SAVE THE GALAXY FROM EVIL plots, but interesting side stories that complement the original narrative, and give the setting more depth. They are smaller stories, focused on individual campaigns or even just one bad day, and the personal level in them resonates much more with me.

We don't see too many spinoffs like this anymore, and I think that's a damn shame. Nowadays, franchises are all focused on SEQUELS, and BIGGER AND BETTERER games, trying to top their predecessors by upping the stakes and making everything bigger. You rarely see a spinoff, because they don't have a 2 or 3 slapped on the end of their title.

It's this linear perspective that bugs me, because I feel that it robs game settings of their potential. You set up these interesting locales and characters, and then never capitalize on them because you need to follow your SAVE THE WORLD plot.

I know this is a bit rambling, but whatever. TLDR: Spinoff games. Do you like the idea? What are some that you enjoyed and how did they expand on their respective series?

I think that possibility and success of spin-off very strongly depends on a game universe. If a universe is solid and original there are countless ways you can make spin-offs out of it. Prime example would be Star Wars.
As for me, I'd really love to see more spin-offs of Mass Effect and Front Mission series. Both series have very well written and defined universes and there are countless stories yet to tell and genres to explore. This is actually why I kinda liked Front Mission: Evolved, a shooter spin-off of a mostly Turn-Based-Strategy series. Sure, plot was almost intolerable and gameplay a bit clanky, but game still managed to convey that classic feel of Front Mission games, with political intrigues, super nations, giant robots and ungodly awesome levels of customization.

Metal Gear Rising! Dissidia Final Fantasy! Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep! Persona 3 and 4! Devil May Cry (started as a spin-off of Resident Evil)!

Yeah, I like spin-offs. I like that they give the opportunity to expand past the original scope of the main franchise, either in story, gameplay, or both, while maintaining themes and styles endemic of the parent franchises and occasionally branching out to explore different themes.

Is this all about Halo spinoffs or in general?
In general, I haven't played too many as all the franchises I like don't do them. Fallout: New Vegas was fun if it counts, but I'd prefer spinoffs to be a different genre. Like a Mass Effect racer or an Assassin's Creed sim. I think some franchises could really do spin-offs, especially Mass Effect. I love the universe but I think any RPG-like story would feel small compared to what has come before.

Just in general. I used Halo as my example because it is one of my favorite settings, and I have greatly appreciated the side story elements that were created.

Well I like how Persona 4 Arena is a spin off fighting game version of Persona 4. It's also totally canon and sets up for a direct sequel.

I would LOVE a Persona 4: *insert subtitle here* series of spin offs and then Persona 5 proper can be its own thing totally on its own. I doubt P5 would be Persona 4: The Second One with the same characters. I was worried about Persona 5 dropping the mystery elements but if they keep Persona 4 the mystery centric one then make P5 something entirely new then that's awesome.

As a side note Atlus, if you're increasing how much Persona you're going to make, SORT YOUR FUCKING PUBLISHING OUT! August 6th 2012 for P4A? More like, 10th of May 2013 lol.
