I know there's a chance I might be shouted at for this but I wasn't really sure how to get started on it.

I've become interested in game modding recently and have started learning how to create 3D models using blender. I'm generally more interested in getting my own ideas into a mod but I realise that simply dictating ideas is not a good idea. I've tried learning how to code but I always find it too difficult, I'm learning how to model because its a job that seems to take up alot of time in the production process and I can grasp it more easily.

Recently I've had the urge to create a space fleet combat mod (think Day of Sagitarius from Haruhi except in 3D like Homeworld). It sounded like a good idea for a first mod to me, however I'm not sure what game I should mod it from and at the moment I have no team. The only person I know who might be of use is an illustrator who probaly wouldn't help me anyway.

I know its probaly very unlikely I'll get something positive from posting here but I figure I might aswell try, heh.

(I'm also available if anyone wants me to do 3D models for anything, I'm in the very early stages of learning at the moment but I can create most objects if given views from several angles and it's good practice I figure)

If you want any other information on my game ideas or my 3D modelling ask me about it in a PM, I'm very interested in any kind of helpful advice that anyone has to offer because I'm finding it very difficult getting started with modding.

I'm sorry I'm not sure about any editor that can help with your game mod idea. I'd say check this site for ideas on which game might be best. http://www.moddb.com/mods It's a database of all the game mods for all diffrent game that are release, being made and sometime sadly die.

I'd say best to look at all the games you have and see that editor that have given you, then ahve a god making mini level/mods of your own. It'd be best to have some experance in modding before joining/creating a team

Well you mentioned Homeworld, I believe there is still a fair amount of modding going on in Homeworld 2, that might be a good place to start for spaceship mods. Maybe try the Relic forums.

Alternatively, Freespace (2) and X2 / X3 have large modding communities I believe. I think people may be looking at modding Sins Of A Solar Empire, but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: Taken from Wikipedia -

"In 2002, Volition released the source code for the game engine to the public. This code became the core of the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project, which has produced several mods based on science fiction series such as Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica."

In particular, take a look at this wiki entry, with various links and whatnots -

Modding's always been a bit difficult for me - I've never been that PC-Savvy, although I've dallied with MaxEd I and II (To little effect). I just wish developers could try and make a devpack which was fairly simple to use, without requiring me to go overboard and learn several strings of coding and compiling and the like.

Good luck mate at the modding but you have to have a big enough to computer to actually put the game on and the if you go to
http://www.gmod.com/
and click get mod you should be able to create some world of warcrafts mod or half life
