For watchers of the program, and readers of the books alike, I figured that this (sweet) map might come in handy keeping your Westeros Geography up to scratch. I, for one, realised that my perception of most of the key location's, well, location, was completely wrong.

Not created by me, but I thought I'd share.

damn, looks awesome I have never seen the series and/or read the books because they don't air in my country but I might give it a try because almost everyone is positive about it.

Definitely go for it. Book 5 (July 12th :D) is one of the few book releases I've ever been properly pumped for. Been saving a book voucher for half a year specially for it!

That's a much prettier map than any that I've seen - looked around after I realized how confused I was as to where everything fit together.

Could use some lines to mark off where each of the seven kingdoms are, and some directions as to where the stuff outside westeros lies (eg, "To Braavos ->"), but I'm just picking on small details here.

It's true, I had to spend a while looking for important castles, too, like Dragonstone, Storm's End etc, but I found that quite fun anyway.

And it's definitely a great alternative to the black and white one in the books.

Great map. However It perplexes me. Hell the entire world perplexes me. First off is this world an archipelago? What is on the other side of the world?

Beyond that, It seems this planet has a decidedly different orientation than earth. Notions like winter lasting for years indicate a planet whos axis wobbles more than earth. If that is true the planet would likely be infinitely more geologically unstable.

Seeing the map is indeed interesting. It helps to put it all together so to speak.

I'd recommend reading the entire first book before making your decision as to whether or not you think that it's a good read. If you stop at, say, page 12 and then decide that you don't like it, then you'd really be missing out, as things don't really pick up until at least 2/3 of the way in.

That being said, this has got to be the best map of Westeros I have ever seen.

Yeah I know, I've spent a lot of time thinking about how that planet makes sense. I think that the world is huge.

That doesn't look like Britain at all!
On the other hand I doubt a fiction writer would actually draw a damn map. He had to base it on SOMETHING.

What is Game of Thrones?
This might be a little bit over your head if you're not good with history, but since you asked I'll go ahead and give it to you as straight as I can.

Game of Thrones is the name of the first book in the series "A Song of Ice and Fire" (we still call it "Game of Thrones" as it's much easier to remember) and is as close to a more accurate depiction of "The War of the Roses" as it can get while still being a fantasy series. It's also very famous for the sudden death of main characters (and there are a lot of them.)

Hell, the series is so famous, that it was even made into a board game (which is made by Fantasy Flight, for those of you who're wondering.) There was a card game, too, but it didn't catch on quite as well.

For an even more accurate description, here's the wikipedia link (warning: might contain spoilers):

As I've stated before, the series is as close to an accurate depiction of "The War of the Roses" as you can get without it actually being said war. Same holds true for the map being as close to Britain as possible.

Think of it this way: that cold area north of The Wall? That's the Westeros' version of Scotland.

There is a map in the book, but it's really, really average.

And is it just me, or does anyone else spot a deformed UK?

Large capitol city in the SE.
Cold frozen north populated by "wildlings" that don't want the southern government separated by a wall.....
I could go on.

A wizard did it. Thats why the planet doesn't explode.

hehehe No sir/madam, you're not the only one.

Not much of a historian, myself (my husband is, however ^_^) but I pegged it as a fantasy version of The War of the Roses the first time I read the words "House Lannister".

I'm very proud of myself for that. ^^

except house lannister doesnt really fit with the lancasters and neither do the starks fit the yorks, the tygarians and the baratheons fit better as those two respectivly

I too have the book, and I know the map.
This one is colorful and much more 'professional'.
But there isn't much of a thread here.

I fail to see how else I could have shared this with the Game of Thrones fans on the site without making a thread, so...presto!

would I be able to understand the plot from the series even if I haven't read the books? if yes then I will give the series a try and see if I like the lore/world
Most definitely. The show follows the plot exactly is excellent. The book has more (good) detail in the form of internal monologues, dreams etc that are hard to convey on the small screen.
