This might be a little bit over your head if you're not good with history, but since you asked I'll go ahead and give it to you as straight as I can.
Game of Thrones is the name of the first book in the series "A Song of Ice and Fire" (we still call it "Game of Thrones" as it's much easier to remember) and is as close to a more accurate depiction of "The War of the Roses" as it can get while still being a fantasy series. It's also very famous for the sudden death of main characters (and there are a lot of them.)
Hell, the series is so famous, that it was even made into a board game (which is made by Fantasy Flight, for those of you who're wondering.) There was a card game, too, but it didn't catch on quite as well.
For an even more accurate description, here's the wikipedia link (warning: might contain spoilers):

That doesn't look like Britain at all!
On the other hand I doubt a fiction writer would actually draw a damn map. He had to base it on SOMETHING.
As I've stated before, the series is as close to an accurate depiction of "The War of the Roses" as you can get without it actually being said war. Same holds true for the map being as close to Britain as possible.
Think of it this way: that cold area north of The Wall? That's the Westeros' version of Scotland.
