Game of Thrones Season 3 Details Surface

Martin's third book will require two seasons and an army of new faces.

The trouble with writing a series where characters die constantly is that you'll need fresh faces to refill the roster. This is a problem that HBO is both ready and willing to tackle with the latest season of Game of Thrones, the popular adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. The first two seasons left a few holes in the cast, and no fewer than 12 new characters will step in to fill their leather boots. Furthermore, Season 3's source material is so dense that it will require Season 4 to tell the second half of its tale.

While not every single character from Martin's doorstopper A Storm of Swords will appear in the upcoming seasons, the network wants to include as many personalities as possible without overwhelming the audience. "If you hurl 300 characters at an audience, the story collapses under the weight of too many faces, too many names, and too many subplots," says David Benioff, one of the Game of Thrones showrunners. "We need to be just as mindful of the audience members who have never read the books as we are of the readers; the series will fail if we only appeal to those who already know the characters. So we try to be parsimonious about how many new roles we introduce to the story and when we introduce them." Among others, Season 3 will include Mance Rayder, Jojen and Meera Reed, Beric Dondarrion, and Thoros of Myr - in other words, knights, priests, siblings, and other personages you might expect to find in an epic fantasy story.

If your favorite character didn't show up, don't write him or her off just yet; Benioff adds that the list is far from definitive. "[Holy] hell," he continues, "that's a lot of new faces." Casting for these roles has not yet been announced, but once it is, you'll have at least two seasons to get to know them - provided they don't get impaled within the first few episodes. That sort of thing has been known to happen in the Seven Kingdoms.

Good news from all I've heard, though I haven't read the books. Speaking of collapsing, I just hope that the show doesn't end up collapsing under it's own weight. I want to see it stay on air until the entire story has been told but I'm just not sure that it's going to be possible.

this is going to get complicated very soon. I shudder to think what they're going to have to do with Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

Nice - glad to hear Jojen and Meera will be in after all. Judging from recent episodes, it seemed like they'd been cut. I'm hoping we meet the Bloody Mummers as well.

I said this to a friend of mine earlier today, so don't read this as sarcasm directed at you:

"The Reeds have been cast? Good, I guess... but now, what's the point? What logical explanation could they have for them showing up?"

And by extension, why reason could they give for splitting up Bran and Rickon?

"Oh hi. I know you just met us, but we're here to split the boys up. We want to take Bran North of the wall for reasons completely unmentioned throughout season 2. You can totally trust us."

I don't like it.

With all the changes made in season 2, at this point I'd like to see Osha and Hodor as king and queen.

HODOR.

It's a good sign, but as Mumorpuger said it may be too little too late. The second season has deviated a lot more than the first, and unlike the first I can't really see the reason for some of it. It's going to make the third season a little weird when they have to justify a few things.
But I'll wait and see if they pull through, splitting the book into two seasons is a very good choice.

Thank heavens this was released, I was sick and tired of seeing internet people complain about all the missing characters.

It seems to me that we meet quite a few characters in the books a long time before they actually do anything worth paying attention to, like Beric Dondarrion, or characters that aren't really necessary (at least at first), like the Reeds or The Blackfish. Having them show up later rather than sooner seems a lot more sensible for a TV show.

I'm also relieved that they really are splitting SoS into two seasons. I'd heard a rumour, but it's nice to have confirmation.

One of the things I liked about the first season was how they managed to stick to the book and still tell a tight and coherent story that newcomers could follow. The changes they made to the source material were for the better, at least as far as the medium goes (Roz the Exposition Whore was a good move, for instance).

However, I can't help but feel that the 2nd season strays a bit too far at times. A great example is how they dropped Jeyne Westerling and introduced Talisa. This, together with the fact that Robb is now a main character (in the books he didn't have any chapeters of his own) completely changes Robb's character, motivations and the tone of the story. The one thing I found compeling about the whole Jeyne Westerling affair in the books was precisely the fact that she was nobody special. Heck, she hardly appears in the books and is shown to be mostly timid. In effect, Robb, who was half person and half legend and hearsay in the books compromised himself over some nobody girl who isn't anything special. In the show it's more along the lines of Virtuous Hero gets the Spunky Chick, which I find less interesting...

Also, the scene where Joffrey beats up whores for 15 minutes was just pointless...

Don't get me wrong, I still love the show, I just feel it's not as tightly plotted as the first season and that they might have gone a bot overboard with the unneeded changes to the source material.

I can certainly dig the decision to make A Storm of Swords two seasons rather than one. However, what I'm wondering about is what they are going to do with A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. If I had my way I'd say combine them and run them as 2, maybe 3 seasons of television. A Feast For Crows is, in my opinion the weakest book of the series so far and A Dance With Dragons felt kind of padded in places.

If it's going to stay on air...well Martin better hurry up and get writing the rest of the books cos at this rate the TV show will have caught up before the last book is out.

I'm getting a strong feeling that this series will probably last at least over ten seasons which is a good thing. I rather hate for them to snip away some parts and try to fit it all in.

I hope the third season has a bit more focus, because season two felt a bit adrift.

I never read the books so mabye that's how it's supposed to be.

Honestly they have felt padded since the second book, he goes from pushing the story right along to wandering off in 20 different directions randomly killing people off that frankly I wasn't sure why I was meant to give a good god damn about in the first place.

The books are way worse for meandering off in to stuff that it turns out is totally irrelevant to the story. Almost like if Lord of the rings had tried to add the Silmarillion in every other chapter.

Feast for Crows has a lot of nothing in it. I would have no problem with Feast For Crows being half a season.

Yes on both of those.
Jojen & Meera are my favorite outer circle characters.
And they have to bring in Quyburn at least; Vargo & the others are entertaining as well but I wonder if they'll keep his speech impediment...wasn't Podric supposed to have a stutter?
The thing is that the characters spread even further apart and those who were once outer circle characters get their own storyline. It's a good idea.
However, as I understand it, the author split book 4 into 2 books so is season 5 going to be split into 4 seasons?

The problem is that the kids are going to get a lot older when they're really only supposed to be aging a year or two in the 5 books.

I just want to see Oberyn Martell show up. Every scene he's in in the book is fantastic.

They've been having auditions for Vargo Hoat so we at least get some of that storyline.

having amory lorch's death be arya's second named-death from jaqen kinda takes away the satisfying end of the Mummer's story though.
