Cause random prostitutes are integral to the plot.
Well, when you have a major character who runs a brothel, and a particular employee of his who plays a secondary role, yeah, they may not be integral per se, but they are used to support the world and characters.

(Also, seeing as you only watched the first episode of a pretty complex plot, obviously you won't be seeing the best of the plot and characters. I mean, really, did you expect to?)
No, I didn't. I just found what I have seen of it so unimpressive that I'm not sticking with it. Nice props and costumes only go so far for me.

the plot and characters really aren't what I'm wondering about
but, that's what is so great about it. i'm only half into the second book now but up to date with the TV, so i'll try to say the appeal of each.

for the TV, well, blood and boobs do come into it, but personally if i really wanna see boobs i don't go to tv, and there isn't THAT much blood either. personally i like the soundtrack, the actors do a really good job at keeping faithful to their character's presence in the books, and that seals it for me. the characters are so well crafted (in both) that none of them are really dull, or if there is a dull moment, its because another's story arc is going to crash into it and we have to see the interaction between the two.

furthermore, it adds new characters at decent times, when we're familiar with existing ones and can take in new information. it keeps the pace solid throughout. now, specific to the books, i really like how it is written. by this i mean the way that each chapter is a different person's viewpoint, always keeps you interested and makes you want to know more. but also because it covers so many characters, we're never filled in on the really boring shit that happens to them, we're only really told what we're interested in. not to mention how all the characters interlink with each other, there's a lot going on and it makes you feel like it really is an epic WORLD.

that's why i like it anyway

Ever read Fantasy?
Ever noticed how you're always forced to see how the obvious few good guys (elves, men, dwarfs, etc.) struggle against the mighty oppression of the vast number of obvious bad guys (orcs, goblins, etc.)? "The Evil" usually have no reason behind burning villages and killing the weak and innocent other than just being bad.

And that's usually because we never receive any context or see anything through the enemies eyes and everything is just so predictable.
Game of thrones is, compared to other Fantasy, just so well written.
No side is ever bad, they just have different interests. Characters are flawed and bad decision here and there suddenly take effect down the road. People die even after doing the right thing and because all of them are so fleshed out, it's kinda painful to see them disappear and have all there plans and hopes be for naught.
A chapter usually ends with a cliffhanger and takes you somewhere else longing to get back, so you keep on reading and reading.

Watch the first season, it takes it's sweet time but once you're caught it doesn't let go. If your not into books that's fine, I personally find the series a great adaptation compared to most (it sometimes adds context with extra scenes, which were only hinted at in the books), but as we get deeper into the series I sometimes find it lacking in quality (because of the sheer amount of things happening).

And don't let the "Fantasy" stable put you off, magic and creatures exist, sure. But it usually has this fake feeling and stays secret from most of the world.
You should just try it yourself, watching an episode and getting bits of information doesn't really work for a show like this, as it's always building up to something.

A must read, but be warned George R.R. Martin is a genius so after reading Game of Thrones you might find other books to suddenly be lacking quality.

I love it because of the epic characters! Except Cersei and Joffery... and Catelyn, and Lysa... and her bloody sickly son... and Theon... I'm currently reading through a Feast for Crows and it's boring the shit out of me. Seriously, I don't give a shit about the Greyjoys and their bloody seastone throne that was only given a passing mention in book 1 I wanna see more of Jamie and Brienne!

Also, Tyrion. He is by far one of the best characters in the series, also The Red Viper! If they muck up his scenes in the TV show I'm gonna go outside and punch a duck, they already removed Butterbumps and that was disappointing as hell.

Forget butterbumps where's Patchface??
Come to think of it, I don't think Moonboy was there either. It looks like none of of the fools are gonna be in the show. T_T

Fine, that's your opinion. But don't go and claim that the only reason people like it and watch it is because it has nudity just because you don't like it.

Starting a thread about something in which you have no interest? Does not compute.

The characters are varied and well realized, the politics are suitably intricate, the magic and monsters are creepy as hell because they don't belong in that kind of world, and perhaps most importantly it doesn't follow established formulas for fiction i.e. no last-second rescues, no pure-hearted good guys triumphing over unambiguously evil enemies, no magic maguffins that make characters invincible......

The production value is AMAZING. It is 100% a unique interesting world with unique and interesting settings, events and characters.

The story is fantastic, deep, and intricately spun.

Those are generally the things people look for when they decide whether they like something, right?

Maybe some people are gripped by the boobies and blood, but I can't imagine why in the age of endless free internet porn. Ive played so many violent videogames all my life blood has no effect on me any more.

It's a generally good show don't get me wrong its got it's hiccups like certain sets in the first season looking plastic but other than a few minor detracts its what helped me ease back into watching T.V. shows in general and is well worth watching at least once to see what you might think of it.

...you watched one (the first) episode of a plot based series and are complaining you didn't notice a plot?

Seriously?

The first episode of any plot based series is introduction and background, and considering how vast the world to be created is, it's going to take an episode to do. It's not until that base is solidly entrenched that the plot begins to do anything, because what's the point of doing anything with characters that the audience doesn't know anything about?

I'm a fan of the books but not the show (don't hate it or anything, it just hasn't been interesting for me).

now y'see I love both shows, and I'm both excited and saddened for the end of Spartacus next week

as for season 1 of GoT not being as good as it's cracked up to be, originally I thought so too...then I watched it again...try watching it again if you haven't already you WILL like it better I promise you.
I've tried to re-watch the show (not just the first season), and it still doesn't grab me.

I've loved most of ASoIaF and I buy the books as soon as they come out, have re-read them all (although I think the first three were better written - or maybe just better edited - than the more recent two), but I just can't get into the show. I like a lot of the cast, the sets are good, I'm not really bothered by the character and plot changes, so I don't know why I'm not a fan, but I'm not. Which isn't to say that I dislike it since I'm happy to have it on in the background just to see what they do with the material, but I just don't feel any drive to watch it for its own sake.

Do love Spartacus though, so hey.

Yeah, I know they gotta set it up, and I actually find background to be the most interesting thing in many of the media I consume. I like to know about the universe. This one didn't interest me at all, however.
And you can still introduce characters and the setting and still be interesting. Beginning of Dune was introducing the Atreides and telling us about Dune and I found that absolutely riveting.

Except a chunk of the fans I knew irl were mouthbreathers. I think that's just a problem with my sister's friends, though. Regardless: my interest for the show is absolutely non-existent. As I said in a previous post: awesome props, special effects, and costume can't redeem a show that doesn't pique my interest even slightly.

I don't watch it. I really can't get into it which is weird, because I love fantasy. I even tried the to read the first book and after three attempts and three times ditching it, I figured it wasn't meant to be :p

I don't really like the show either. My guy friends say they watch it for the sex and naked women. I tried to watch it, but was instantly disgusted with the treatment of women. Maybe it's just me.
You should probably see more of it, then, because Game of Thrones actually has a very large cast of strong female characters, or female characters that develop into stronger characters. Don't let the gratuitous sex scenes fool you.
