No, they should still hunt all of them down unless they buy the game from a reputable source within a year or so.
That sounds like a waste of money when they could you know, be doing something to help their fellow man instead of some faceless corperation.

Yes corporations are evil and not run by people.

Indeed. You do more good jailing a dealer than a druggie. But then again, Agencies aren't lauded for their smart and rational decisions so much as upholding the Corporate Agenda.
and the police and other authorities can only do one thing at a time, and they always have leads on drug related crimes. There are people trained for this kind of stuff that cant investigate drug crimes so they cant help other ways.

OT: I agree with the fine but not the jail time. It just seems a bit long for the crime. The main part should be a fine that will take him forever to repay so he wont do it ever again.

good on the guys who found him :)
IMO think they should go after the uploaders (the original seeders in the case of torrents) rather than a few downloaders, cus imagine the task of finding the huge amount of people that have downloaded compared to those that upload these things.

Well I think the issue here is that there's only really resources to hunt the big fish. It's really difficult and resource intensive to hunt down the microbes as well.

OT: Who wants to place bets that anon will claim this man is being unjustly persecuted and launch more cyber attacks?

Edit: Anyway I'm fine with them spanking the people who make copies of it and sell it for a lower price to make money. If they make it available on line for free then I'm fine with that even though they will make money from people seeing all the adds on their site but that's not the same.
i agree that corporations suck, but i disagree that hurting a corporation is a victimless crime. i also find your argument that "stealing is ok as long as no one profits" to be incredibly...something. i can't even think of a word. it simply makes no sense to me. it's like the argument a nihilist would make.

When does the Justice in the US start hunting down people who make over 500 times the minimum amount needed to survive, while other people starve in the ditches?

The common man downloads movies because he can't afford them, and the rich artists whine about it?

When will the way the wealth is distributed in this country be called out?

Given how clear, organized, commercial, and expansive his copyright infringements were, I can't really say I think the sanction is disproportionate in this particular case.

Commercial pirates and the first to upload a product should be the targets, going after the immense number of downloaders - who're simultaneously customers - is unfeasible in terms of resources and generating public legitimacy around copyright laws (which also need to be more focused on their real purpose and protect consumer rights as well as industry ones for that purpose).

Good point, but I'm sure there's some way of doing it. >.<

As for bets, I got 5 cookies on them DDoS'ing Nationwide.
Need a deadline, within what time do you think it will happen? With that I can make up some odds and know how many cookies to give you if you're right.

If I gave you a list of pirated software to try to track down a fully functional legitimate version of within a year, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to do it, especially if I gave you a budget.

That's the thing about this article, is that it's not giving us all the details. What game(s) was/were being pirated? Without that detail, it's all speculation.

Hmm... by Jan. 2, 2011, 10:31 AM PST. I'm gonna go crazy specific. :D
I declare the odds 3 to 1. which means you will recieve a payout of 15 cookies on January 3 (the news will come after the attacks and it's when the attacks that occur that matters not when they're made known to the public) if you win.

God how weak... they should also every day while in jail medically stop his heart and revive him, then after being revived waterboarding then lunch. After lunch lacerations across his entire body and then douse them in a mixture of salt and lemon juice. then for the evenings entertainment being shown a lesbian love scene between rosanne barr and Kathy bates on a continuous loop with his eyes forcably kept open.

Seriously, While I do respect this guy had some degree of punishment coming for trying to COUNTERFEIT and make a profit from his piracy, the reactions of people here about how much punishment this guy deserves are completely unrealistic and at times inhumane.

If I didnt know any better, I would think these outlandish claims are rabble rousing just to support the notion of the forums that Piracy R bad. Almost like the ones crying loudest are the ones with the most to hide.

Regardless, Its getting very old.

Y'know what, they could. They could go do some charity work, or send in a small donation to some philanthropic organisation like Child's play, or they could just give a dollar to a homeless man on the street, instead of either waiting for an illegal torrent to download or legitimately buying a game.
Oooh, nice twist!

OP - I'm kinda sad that this is national news. It should be more along the lines of "Man falls in the water, gets wet."

You do accomplish more when you nail pushers, but that doesn't mean you should just be able to use illegal drugs.

Whether or not those drugs should be illegal is a different conversation, and not at all relevant to the point I'm making. If something is against the law, and piracy is, you should be punished for it.
