So, The Legend of Korra video game (the console/PC one, not the turn-based 3DS one) comes out October 21st, roughly a week and a half from now. I'm kind of exited for it, but also feel kind of meh about it as well. Anybody have a game like that they feel the same about?
You see, when it was announced in came the diehard Platinum fans saying how it'd be GOTY because Platinum and about time we got an Avatar game that wasn't like that subpar trilogy based on the old series that people got just to get easy achievements and hear the voice actors. Thousand something gamerscore in 5 minutes or whatever. Anyway, back to Korra. This was before it was announced it was a smaller title, a $15 downloadable. So, it was not the big adventure I was hoping for, but, hey I heard good things about Platinum. I certainly enjoyed the one game I played from them, Madworld. Plus, the game takes place between Books 2 and 3 when the series found its groove and is considered canon as it is written by the actual writers from the show.
Then, I saw the gameplay videos. A lot of people are still fawning over it, but I have become more skeptical. It is not just that I worry Platinum is put on a pedestal, that's something I cannot know for sure until I've played more of their games anyway. Nothing looked up to par compared to what my imagination had in mind. To quote something I said in a different thread

I still want to get this game. I am just setting myself up for disappointment because while I am sure it will be good, I do not think it will be the magnificent adventure I was hoping for. I am excited for it to prove me wrong.Looking at what it seems we're getting with the simplicity given to the fighting, I'm just not impressed. I mean I see some iconic moves, the Air Scooter and that water dome thing, but I don't feel a real sense of flow unique to each bending type. There is some match up to the real martial artist foundations of the bending, I suppose. You've got some properly set up punches and kicks to the very basic general attacks that would match what we've seen on TV. They have mentioned how each bending style has its advantages in terms of range, power, and versatility. That's about it though; it translates on too superficial a level for me. I mean when I see those finishing moves, especially the fire based one, I see an unfortunate prioritizing on style and flashiness over substance that would have actually translated into a higher quality game. I'm sure from Platinum's viewpoint that flashiness works fine here and helps give the fans a sense that it is still a Platinum title. And, I'm sure they think they've got the property down, yet, to me, it's because they don't have a grasp on the full idea of what this property is.
Then there's some more minor hiccups I've got too. In regards to the look, with the platforms this is coming out on, there's a bit of touch up they could have done and I'm not sure I understand how they couldn't have made the locations a little more dense. When a mecha tank is destroyed you see its remains after the smoke clears with all the parts scattered rather than getting a look at the actual destruction process [seeing the parts break apart as they're being broken]: It's just an automatic transition. [That just seems lazy] Again, it's not coming out on platforms that can't handle these things. [The glowing orbs and runner sections turn me off too]. These nitpicks in some way all contribute to this just feeling too "gamey" and with all the increased chatter on achieving minimalism and escapism in games that's a pity too.
