I just had to take a break playing Part 2 of Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea. It kept feeling like I was nearing the end, but then I got to the torture scene and I just had to check out.

Pre-frontal lobotomy. Jesus Christ.

How about The Deep Roads in Dragon Age: Origins? It's a marathon of 4 dungeons complete with 3 boss fights and a mini-boss fight. I wouldn't consider it "emotionally" exhausting, but rather simply "mentally" exhausting. It may not take more than a couple hours to completely scour every nook and cranny of those caves, but god damn does it feel like you've been wandering in the depths for ages!
True, but you've got to admit, you feel like a MAN afterwards! I think that segment is perfectly constructed to feel physically taxing, and when it ends, it really feels like you've got blood under your nails, and it's so great to sell your trinkets afterwards and just accumulate a fortune in gold.
My point exactly, which is why I always need to take a break after completing that segment. =P

Yeah, MGS4 was flawed but (almost) everything from the microwave hallway to when Snake dies in the graveyard was fantastic to me.
They way it ends with that camera pan and sound of a gunshot was like a(nother) punch in the gut.
R.I.P in peace Snake...

Oh and I cried when Aeris(th?)(...s?)(?!?) died... Tears of joy that is!

I began playing Persona 4 without any knowledge prior. Not sure if spoilers are still needed for such an old game but

Not taking the correct dialogue choices accidently killed Nanako and jegus that was bleak

Also episode 3 from the Walking Dead.
Oh yes. This. That scene with Nanako really made me tear up.

Well, this is a first. What turned you off about her? It's been ages since I played that game so I can't remember much about her, aside from her being, idealistic and adventurous.

The only time that has happened to me while playing a game was Spec Ops: The Line, about half way through. If you are at all familiar with the game, you know which part I'm talking about. Literally felt sick and had to turn the game off for a bit.
I know exactly what you mean, that was like a kick to the balls, or since its actually two terrible things happen in very rapid succession two kicks.

Mass Effect 2: The Collector ambush on insanity. I had to put it down for a week to bounce back from that.
Because of what happens there storywise or because of the difficulty gameplaywise?
The difficulty or perhaps I should say the terrible design of that segment.

I still haven't finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I made it past the section where you get chased by some insane water monster in my first sitting and then I decided that I needed a break since I felt like I was going to have a heart attack.

I was exagerrating of course but yeah I was a bit happy to be rid of her.
I was a dumb, stupid little kid when I first played it so I don't remember many specific things.
But I think it was me just not generally being interested in her and not liking they way she acted and talked and never using her only for me to cross into just plain disliking her because she forced herself into my awesome party I had for that one temple bit making it an absolute pain to get through.

On subsequent playthroughs I went to just not caring, and only when I played it for the last (7th) time (7 years ago in 2007) did I actually feel a bit bummed about it. You know, if they'd have killed off anyone else I'd have been crying my eyes out.
Even Yuffie, whom I hated for stealing my stuff all the time.

Probably the scene from The Last of Us, where Joel and Ellie witness the death of Sam and Henry. Two brothers that were stuck together, forced to grow up, especially the Henry, who was forcing his younger brother to grow up, like only caring food and supplies; no toys. Then, When Same turns infected and Henry has to put him down, he then tries to kill Joel, but then kills himself, since Sam was the only thing that Henry had left in the world they lived in. After that, I could go back playing till the next day.

That whole human trafficking bit in Watch_Doge made my stomach churn a bit, actually. Had to go play Terraria to let the realities of that cool off in my mind a while.

OT: Am I the only one who still thinks the torture scene in Grand Theft Auto V was absolutely brutal? Looking back on it, I still think it was a very effective segment of the game, but it was uh... 'icky' to say the least.

Very icky...
I'd heard a tiny bit about that part of the game before I reached it. At first I was kind of mortified, but as I drove away from the warehouse and Trevor is talking, I found it to be the single best statement the game made. The story mode bored me so much that it took me nearly two months to complete; however, the torture scene, Trevor's flight to North Yankton, and the three possible endings were, in my opinion, utterly brilliant.

Then again, I'm into the dark and macabre. ;)

OT, no game has left me so emotionally exhausted that I had to stop. What makes me stop is either my ADHD, difficulty, or sheer boredom. For example, I started playing Just Cause 2 last week and I'm doing my first run on hardcore mode for the difficulty achievements. I'm at the start of mission 6 (out of 7) and I know that, once I'm done with the story, I'm going to start up a new game on casual and enjoy all the wild, fun shit that you can't do in hardcore. Some of the biggest problems with hardcore mode are that enemy bullets do crazy damage and respawns are totally out of control. May as well change the name of the game from "Just Cause" to "Just Retreat Every Minute or Two."

EDIT - don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying the game! Hardcore mode is a fun challenge, but it's taken me almost 40 hours to get to 20% completion and I don't want to invest the next month of my gaming time into getting 100% gamerscore.

This only ever happens when something scares the shit out of me.

-The ichthyosaur from Half-Life got me good. However, when you enter the very next room, and there are 2 of 'em in much deeper water, I had to take a step back ...for a few days.

-After the famous bathtub scene from Eternal Darkness, I pressed on. But when you find out the mysteriously blacked-out room is another bathroom, I immediately saved and quit.

-I can only play Amnesia, Outlast, etc. in 10-15-minute sittings. Those games just get to me.

Every final battle in a Kingdom Hearts game, especially in 358/2 Days on the DS... Not even the 1.5 cinematic movie version of 358 could live up to the emotional ride of actually playing through that endgame situation for me...

Other than that, every time I get pass a very difficult section in Jak 2 on Hero Mode *cough*AirshipTankermission*cough* makes me want to take a good long break, mostly to calm down from all of the raging I was having beforehand...

The girl who I woo'd in Mass Effect 2 immediately died afterwards on the suicide mission, and I was heartbroken. I had the complete trilogy, so I could have moved right onto 3, but there were a couple of days of sadness. I could at least console myself that I didn't give into the Illusive Man towards the end.

The worst part was in Mass Effect I ended up murdering her entire race, and I had to stop again out of guilt from my poor leadership choices. Like the least I could have done in her honor was not let the rest of her species die...

With every InFamous game, I play them through twice over, once good once evil. I do the villain first on easy, and than go for hero on hard for the challenge. The first time I played Infamous 2, towards the end, I found myself in a terrible predicament where I had to kill Zeke. The game prompted me to zap him. I put down the control to refuse, but when he shot me, I did what I had to do and fried my best friend. Zeke was one of the hardest bosses I've ever fought, and it was a few weeks before I played through again as a Hero.

It has been mentioned, but pretty much after any section of Dark Souls..
Seriously, I haven't played it in 3 weeks now, after beating Nito and getting through the Dukes Archives, I just haven't found the courage to dive back in and for the Crystal Caves yet. I've never played a game where I feel perpetually stressful, especially when I have lots of souls on me..

I will go back to it, and I will complete it.

Just not yet.
