Game series you would like to see made into an 'mmo-like' experience.

Now to start this off, I would like to say that I use the term 'mmo-like' as a way of saying it would be an online open world experience, it says absolutely nothing about core systems like combat or certain themes like dungeons and rotations etc. Just wanted to get that out of the way first.

EDIT: As I didn't really explain it properly before, here is a continuation of the above.

These seem to be the primary complaints against the idea so I would like to address these. I would like to make this perfectly clear as I don't think my explanation of 'mmo-like' really covered it. I am talking about anything massively multiplayer here people. It is not restricted to same tired mechanics repeated and over used in WOW and so many of its clones. Games that you could honestly say "hey I loved X's Gameplay, I wish I could have something like that with more people!". This is your ideal here, not something you would want pitched to destroy the rest of a single player franchise and not something you would want restricted to the same tired systems used before. Think of upcoming titles like 'Star Citizen','The Division', and 'Black Desert' those are all games that are breaking away from the traditional mmo mold to further expand upon the premise by keeping core gameplay elements in a massive world. The Division is basically going to play like a ghost recon title with a massive online component. There are other games such as 'Kingdom Under fire II' which will be keeping all of the core gameplay of the original, a full single player story and an mmo component built in. Something like that.
Anyways on to my list.

Lost Planet: Practically writes itself. A massive world filled with limitless monsters large and small where there is plenty of scavenging and city remains to search through and multiple factions competing over resources? Make it happen. Ever since I played through the first lost planet I had the idea in my head for a game like this, ever since playing the second one I had a good idea for all the different types of environments you could implement into it. I would love to have my own base operated by my group like the jungle pirates did, I would love to scavenge throughout ruins to find more materials to fix up various Vital Suits and go Akrid hunting for precious thermal energy.

Fable: No I am not talking about anything past the lost chapters, we are going to pretend that never happened. I loved the huge variety of skills and magic present in the original game and just how well they were done. Each spell felt truly unique and not just a recolored swap with a different elemental effect like other games, chain lightning felt satisfying and cool and fireball was a completely different type of spell that was also good in its own right. I would want a game where I can be whatever I want and do whatever I want with a group of my friends and with a combat system like the first game I can see myself getting endless enjoyment out of such a thing. I wish I could go more into detail on the whole concept but it would be way to long of a post really, if I can track down my flash drive I have this all written down on I will put up a pastebin or something xD

Dragon's Dogma: I loved this game to absolute death, everything that is already in the game would likely work even better with multiple people. Expand the world, add some hub towns and a decent amount quests/instances and your good to go. Grabbing a party of friends to go hunt down a griffin or a drake with the combat mechanics already present in the game would be awesome to the extreme, especially when using cooperative moves such as spring boarding a melee ally off your shield to let them grab on to a flying enemy.

Resident Evil: This really applies more to zombie games in general than Resident Evil but I have to say I have always wanted to play the perfect PvE focused zombie game. Ever heard of Dead Frontier? It is a browser based top-down perspective zombie game, while that doesn't sound incredibly interesting at first the main draw of the game is the setting. You play in a sprawling city where nearly every building is enterable and lootable and you can build barricades in cleared buildings in order to protect yourself. As you continue to progress you level up and can devote points into weapons skills and things such as moving faster or having more melee damage. Players also choose what profession they were before the outbreak for minor stat bonuses or starting gear (Ex: Cops start off with higher firearms skill and a shotgun). Take that system, give it the gameplay from Resident Evil 6 and stick the players in a fully fleshed out Raccoon City and I am sure you would have a ton of people jumping at the chance to play something like that.

What about you guys, what game series do you enjoy that you would like to see built further upon in an online experience?

Gods no. It ruined the chance for a KOTOR III or Warcraft 4 and if anything it's ruining the likelihood of GTA5 getting any good SP content with GTAO. Even though I play it fairly often the whole MMO structure it went for isn't anywhere near as fun as GTAIV's freemode alone was.

Seriously are we ever getting a Warcraft 4?
Well probably not, last I checked there was never plans for a Warcraft 4 in the first place.

This isn't about what series have done a transfer poorly in the past such as The Old Republic (what did they even do to Revan?!) but rather what series you would like to see be built further upon in an open world. Lost Planet practically screams the need for it as my previous post implied but that was a series that wasn't exactly known for having 10 star story telling in the first place, but just incredibly solid game play with an awesome setting that it would work for. Hell they tried to do a narrative focused version with LP3, look at how that turned out. They may as well have described it as "Dead Space: Akrid Edition"

As for the GTA example I don't even know what to say to that one, anything you could do in the GTA:IV freemode you can do in GTA:V as well, but they added much more to do with your friends in GTA:V so I don't see the point with that at all. As for the story telling I am sure that part must be a joke, as GTA isn't exactly a pinnacle of storytelling nor has it ever been.

Well, since you did discount everything besides the positive impact of the series being online and open world, I guess I can offer some input. Otherwise I would be vehemently opposed to any established series turned into an MMO. Don't get me wrong, it might be commercially successful, it just won't make for an excellent game, it will never capture the "feel" of the series it was based upon, and will most likely devolve into uninteresting grindfests/ F2P pay 2 win bullshit, relying only on name and the online aspect to draw and keep people in.

Back to topic,

The Souls series:
Seriously, the game is already built around this, just expand the world and the maps, create a few more hub areas, add more relevant content, and you've got yourself an MMO. People could work together with the end goal being to rekindle the first flame. Hoho and the PVP, I don't think I even need to explain further, just think about it and you'll realize how awesome it sounds on paper.

That is because I am speaking strictly hypothetically here, if you could take the core elements of a game series you love and make it bigger, which ones would you want to do it with? What gameplay elements/settings do you enjoy enough that would enjoy it being brought to an epic scale?

I can agree on the aspects of combat mechanics and gameplay, the souls series has excellent combat mechanics and more rpgs should look to that kind of thing for guidance. As for the bosses and area design though I am not so sure, the souls series works because it is made up of rather linear areas dedicated to challenging the player, it would be difficult to replicate that same challenge with a ton of players without turning it into a grind and the level design in an open world game would be incrredibly hard to pull off. But yeah, I can totally agree that if they could find a way to make it work I would love it simply for the awesome enemy/combat mechanics and excellent armor designs.

I was thinking about a Fable MMO the other day. In concept it's a great idea, as the game play is definitely not the game's strongest point, so breaking with the standard formula to accommodate for the structure of an MMO probably wouldn't upset too many people. I felt like the games were average on the whole, but I loved the characters, the voice acting and its humour. I look back at them fondly (though I have a tenuous relationship with Fable 3) and I would not be adverse to them expanding the series, as long as they learnt from their past mistakes.

Then I really thought about it. There's a real lack of variation in enemies in the three games I've played (admittedly I haven't touched the new iterations) as well as a very linear plot. It would require some major world-building or innovation to create enough variation to suit an MMO. The areas provided within the games are not large or varied enough to accommodate for an MMOs population, they'd probably have to move the setting away from Albion, which is half of the series' charm.

I know your question was hypothetical but it's probably time for games to move away from token MMOs and open world game play for fashion's sake. MMOs are rarely successful in longevity as people often just return to games they've already invested more time and money in, or stop playing altogether as it's too much of a time sink.

I don't think I'd feel comfortable with Resident Evil from an open world perspective, but there's great potential for the creation of some killer raid bosses! I'd love to see how creative they could get!

Exactly, oozing with prepaid dlc that never meets 1/2 its expectation, simple combat rock paper scissors style combat without even a hint of plot.

Sorry I am with the Warcraft 4 as well, this is something many rts fan has been waiting for.

*Put 'okay so you don't like it, blah blah blah' passive aggressive insult primarily insulting you for not even being on topic and adding nothing good here*

OT: Kingdom Hearts - tons of different worlds with different back stories? With different types of enemies, weapons, magic spells and colorful, fresh graphics + an awesome action gameplay? MMO plz.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... After seeing the result of Elder Scrolls Online, I can't really say I'd want any game series, ones I dis-like or enjoy, to become a MMO experience. Unless it was done well.

If I had to pick, I guess an open world Monster Hunter MMO. Yes, I know Frontier exists. No, I mean pure open world. You accept a quest in a town, go travelling yourself to the location, and kill said monster. Or, you wander the world and come across giant monster fights at random, with other hunters joining the brawl.

.............. Ok, now I do kinda want it

Since most MMO experiences I've had are were quite boring, inc. WoW, I can't really think of any.

I actually thought Fable II was quite good, even if the ending was rather anti-climactic. Although I did get great satisfaction out of shooting Lucien in the face and watching him plummet to the bottom of the spire. "I hope the irony is lost on youuuuuuu[small]uuuuuu[/small]."

Persona. 'Yo dawg, I heard you like socializing so...' After suggesting it in a similar post, I started thinking about how the social sim aspects could be carried over into an online environment. Maybe the game could open with various questions following series tradition and assign an Arcana corresponding to the choices made. Beside different Personas, players would have different preset dialogue options depending on the characteristics of their Arcana (Chariot is usually physically strong and loud, Hermit is usually quiet and wise, Emperor and Empress are born leaders, etc.), while building Social Links with another player allows for the creation and use of Personas of the Arcana of that player, thus encouraging interaction with other players whether through group combat or not.

The other thing that occurred to me is that the Persona series is in general harder than most MMORPGs even if the other players know what they're doing and what elements not to use on which enemies, but judging from positive reception to Wildstar, these games could potentially benefit from a good infusion of challenge to make people pay attention, and I suppose it wouldn't be so different from Persona 3 not allowing you to control your allies and them occasionally making stupid moves. People still loved it.

Armored Core.

The basic setup of the AC universe is primed for faction based play and a steady stream of cosmetic and/or functional gear upgrades as well as an in universe PVP arena.

A few tweaks to balance the combat and Bob's yer Uncle! You got a shiny new MMO.

Same here, you don't make a game end on such a point then continue it in the MMO (I assume the story continued) when it was originally an RTS. I'm not really an MMO guy, I believe that once you buy a game, you shouldn't have to pay to keep playing it forever.

Mass Effect could do it, but then again, look what happened to KotOR...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned .hack yet. The games are already designed to feel like MMORPGs (as they take place in an in-universe one), and I am shocked that Bandai never got around to making an actual .hack MMO. Some of the gameplay systems would need to be tweaked, sure, but if they were to make an MMO that plays similarly to .hack/G.U., I would play the hell out of it forever.

I like how there kinda already is one (although it's actually F2P) called <link=http://kingdomhearts.wikia.com/wiki/Kingdom_Hearts_%CF%87>Kingdom Hearts X [chi], yet it's probably not the kind you're thinking about right now...

OT: Besides a [more international] Kingdom Hearts MMO, I can imagine a MMO based on the Hyperdimension Neptunia series... I mean, there's already basically different "factions" that have their own various quests/missions handed out by the Guild that leads to increasing/decreasing each "faction's" CPU Shares... The concept, alone, sounds like a unique take on a MMORPG experience, I think...

If they kept the gameplay the same as Mass Effect 2 or 3 I think Mass Effect could be a good MMO. I would love to play as a Turian soldier, Krogan Warrior, or Quarian Engineer and have my own ship.
