Game server... Play server?

I've been browsing the smite forums when I stumbled upon this topic. It really baffled me. Is there a difference between a Game server and a Play server? Does a Play server even exist?

Also I tried my best on the title.

They probably mean the authentication is up but cant get players to host.
login/authentication server is the game server
