So I was looking at some old games and damn, do they had awesome names.

Look at the titles of recent RPG's: Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout.
Now look at the titles of their subsequentual installments:
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3
Dragon Age 1
Dragon Age 2
Fallout 1
Fallout 2
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas

Anyway, now look at those badasses:

Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress
Ultima III: Exodus
Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
Ultima VI: The False Prophet
Ultima VII: The Black Gate
Ultima VII: Forge of Virtue
Ultima VII, Part One: Serpent Isle
Ultima VII, Part Two: The Silver Seed

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds
Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn
Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna
Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom
Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge
Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant

Might and Magic: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum
Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World
Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra
Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen
Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen
Might and Magic: World of Xeen
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer

Now there were the numbers after them too, but look at the sequals names, damn, most of them were awesomer than the series name. The worst thing? It costs nothing to give such creative names, just imagine!

Dragon Age 1: Rise of the Darkspawn
Mass Effect 1: Hand of the Reaper
Mass Effect 2: Devil's Advocate
Fallout 3: Brothers of Steel

So in general - nostalgia, good game titles and what do you think would improve the names of recent games(not RPG exclusive)?

It's just a name. I see no big deal in it.
Imagine going into Bestbuy,Gamestop, Wall-mart or whatever and see Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness, Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven, now wouldn't pick them on the spot, just for the name. Look at that "Bane of the Cosmic Forge", hell yeah.

Hmm...you have a point there. But that applies to people who will buy a game based on the name and what the case looks like. I research games beforehand and buy it based on demos, previews, and reviews. But I guess a name matters if you don't do that.

Also, think about this. In the development office, there were probably whiteboards FULL of other names that were, in all likelyhood, equally or slightly less badass.

If nothing else it would make you look it up. Let's face it, if you see the box of, let's say, Halo 3, it wouldn't that exciting, as say Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World. If you never heard or been around the Halo installments, you wouldn't be as interested as the M&MII:GtAW.

In short - yes, depends on the person, I agree.

I think that the sub-titles happened in earlier games because they were pretty sure they'd develop a sequel, thus continuing the story.

Now days, you don't know if you can make a sequel. It depends on how well the game sells. You don't want "Awesome Game: Awesome Sub-title" if you're not making a sequel, because the name implies that you will.

Also, it's really hard to have a good sub-title when the games in the series don't coincide. For example; The Fallout series. They have nothing to do with each other, so there's no need for the other title.
