Which game do you think has the best combat mechanic? I feel that (now I'm talking sword fighting) you should be able to pull off some really cool combos and feel badass for it. When it comes to this, I feel that Devil May Cry and God of War pulls it off the best. If you succeed in mastering the combos, you'll be just as cool as the characters are in the fight scenes.

I assume we are talking about hack 'n' slashers not shooters yes?

In which case maybe not the best but certainly my favourite is the aerial momentum based artistic flowing combat of Otogi: Myth of Demons. And to once again shamelessly self promote, here is my full review of it: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.113073
Also while I am shamelessly promoting... Vrex360 only drinks Pepsi Max... ahhhh refreshing and with zero sugar, delicious.

I'd go with Tales of Vesperia or any Tales game really, may not bevery realistic but they are fun as hell.

I hated Assassin's Creed for many things, but its combat was VERY satisfying.

Red Faction: Guerrilla's demo also has some very satisfying combat.

And any handheld gun that shoots eight miniature nukes deserves a mention.

Definitely Yakuza. The game lets you play as biggest badass ever, and by the end of the game you beat about half a city worth of enemies while fighting more than 6 people at once. Also you encounter gangs that use all sorts of weapons and you beat them with your bare hands (of course, you can use some weapons if you want to). Combos are easy to pull, and heat mode can be obtained quickly...

Also Assassin's Creed, as mentioned above

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and The Two Thrones had a near perfect combat system, they were so much fun to play.

Kratos also kicks serious ass, he would probably beat the Prince in a scrap...

I HATED the combat in Asasins Creed, and in in the new POP. Come on Ubisoft, back to the good old ways!!!

I think I had the most fun with Assassin's Creed's, even though it wasn't that expansive. Just the feeling of being surrounded by guards, slashing one, then spinning around and stabbing another in the back, before moving to a third and slicing his neck open gave me a real rush.
This, completely. Or any of the Dynasty or Samurai Warriors games, and Warriors Orochi. They were pretty damn awesome :D

It's weird, but I can't think of a single game that I've played a lot that had outstanding combat. X-Men Legends was pretty good, partly because you could switch to a new character frequently so the moves never got boring.

I played God of War but didn't like the combat much. It felt repetitive and samey to me.

I felt that the combat (read:melee) system in the original Condemned was quite well done. Sure, a bit flawed at times, but landing a successful hit, really FELT like landing a hit.

Id have to say Tales of Symphonia for its non turn based random battles, and Legend of Zelda.

Only games i think sucked for their combat system is Fable II. Rapidly pressing 1 button without any mana/ammo/energy or cooldown, and having it kill everything around you isnt very "balanced".

i kind of enjoyed "Dead or Alive", the grab, counter, punch way of doing things was good, but i hated how if you were a "fast" girl you would beat the "slow but extremely strong" guy... too unbalanced imo, anywhay the "concept" was good (mastering it is a pain in the arse, i had to play the "practice" thingy like 5 times to understan each move, and in the end, random smashing buttons worked even better)
