Many times is the case when a AAA title comes out, it will come out on both consoles and PC, even when it is clearly intended for a console, or a console's control scheme.

Most of us PC gamers just sneer and shake our head at this, these strange apparitions that do not integrate functionally with a mouse and keyboard. What fel sorcery could possibly conjur such a thing?

Yet they exist, and occasionally I am rewarded these titles for playing other games, or as more often occurs, Steam has a really bitchin sale or i'm simply too lazy to go out and get it at a brick and mortar OR i'm interested in the multiplayer (my console is not hooked to the internet, I only have two cable lines and no, I do not haver a router.)

In these instances I am forced to either suck it up and leave said game unplayable, or attempt the deathmarch of playing said game with mouse and keyboard.

I played the first world of Super Meatboy entirely on keyboard. We will not speak of what occured.

So, after snaffling Batman Arkham Asylum for 7.50 on steam (a game I've already played to completion twice on console but have since traded in and hey, 7.50! - Steam's impulse driven price chicainery is a topic for another day) I finally buckled down and decided to get a game pad - after I determined I sadly, could not just use my ps3 controller that is. I elected to do a little research first, which consisted entirly of Googling "Gamepad" and "bestbuy" to see if such a device could be purchased in a brick and mortar (I am not entirely accepting of purchasing physical products online yet I burn through cash like it's a source of heat on Steam, I suspect it's the part of me that balks at shipping and handling charges and my need for instant gratification.)

Taroo talay, what a day, such a product is indeed availible at my local Best Buy - a store I do not have the best relationship with due to a PC upgrade snafu that resulted in me having to purchase an entirely new desktop - and two such models are availble. The generotastic Logitech USB rumble controller, for $25, and the OFFICIAL XBOX PLASTIC DETHMONGER OF WIRELESSNESS for $60.

Guess which one I bought?

Ohohoh but the folly was once again upon me you see, for upon taking my newly aquired chunk of plastic home, I discovered upon loading my Batmantastic game and beginning it's initial play that, why, all the buttons were totally cocked to mongertown and the axis on the left stick (the movey stick) was completly reversed.

This was unacceptable. Naturally, I assumed it was a matter of tinkering in the game options, or the settings of the pad. Yet an hour later I had come to no improvement. 'BUT I SHALL NOT BE DEFEATED SO EASILY PLASTIC!' I cried alloud, startling the dog and frightening several nearby children. TO GOOGLE!

And Google, ever the nurturing mother, did not let me down. For in the wilds of the internets I was not alone, voices cried out in the darkness, their laments scrawled upon message boards throughout the web - "OMGwtf y wont this fukking thing werk!?!?!?!1" And an answer did shine from the heavens- Xpad Emulator 3.0!

A small trifle of a download, it was a simple folder with several files contained within. Instructions provided were to copy paste these files into the folder containing the games .exe, a bit of PC pseudo sorcery that would surely escape most consoletards and installer script kiddies. I was playing with the big boys now, oh yes, I could even change the gamepads settings by modifying gibberish numbers in a notepad doc.

The function of the files was fairly simple- it tricked the game into thinking you had an official Xbox dethmonger, rather than bargain bin bucko's gamepad. Also optional was another bit which supressed the fact you had a gamepad that was not infact an Xbox dethmonger from the programs sight. By combining these sorceries, Batman Arkham Asylum and Dungeon Siege 3 worked perfectly! HUZZAH!

And let me tell you, after playing Dungeon Siege 3 with a mouse and keyboard using a gamepad was a goddamned revelation. My hands were orgasmic but without the need for napkins I usually have when that sort of thing occurs.

Drunk with my newfound power to distort the games reality, I reinstalled the recently line canceled Red Faction games, determined to finally enjoy both from the comforts of my 1600x900 monitor as the glorious PC gaming master race god intended.

And if you understand narrative arcs, you of course know, this failed miserably.

I tried EVERYTHING. The controls would not come unborked. The closest I could come to proper functionality was in setting it to direct input mode, a throwback mode to the days before shoulder buttons and more than one thumbstick. Hours were spent toiling in the dark recesses of Binaries and notepad docs until at last, I admitted defeat.

What was I to do now? 2 out of 4 wasn't bad - certainly equivilant to the number of students that properly graduate from Uni these days* (*Not an actual statistic did not do the research blahblahblah). But Space Marine loomed on the horizon, a game that would surely work better with a Gamepad.

Yeah long story short I went back and got the goddamned official Xbox Gamepad which is supposed to work perfectly with everything made recently the end. Moral of the Story? Always get the official widget.

Screw you Microsoft, and Screw you Logitech.

I picked up a USB wired X-Box controller back in February, for playing Test Drive Unlimited 2. It works very nicely. My only complaint is that my flying games keep trying to run off of the X-Box controller instead of my joystick if both are plugged in.

I'm one of those freaks who doesn't have a gamepad, opting for a freaking joystick instead. It works pretty good, so not ALL of Logitech's stuff is evil.

But more to the point, why does everyone say that Super Meat Boy is unplayable with a keyboard? I've gotten most of the bandages and am in the salt factory, all on keyboard... Then again, I can play Street Fighter IV on keyboard more effectively than with an arcade stick, so maybe I'm just a mutant.

For $25, you could have bought a Madcatz wired Xbox360 controller. Despite the fact that it's made by Madcatz, it's actually quite good -- I prefer it to the official ones. Although I will say, Xinput is pretty crappy, since it creates all kinds of compatibility issues when you have either a new game and an old controller, or an old game and a new controller. What was wrong with Directinput, Microsoft?

Edit: and as the above poster noted, Logitech makes some pretty darned good stuff. Back in the 90's and early 2000's, they pretty much were the namebrand for PC gamepads and joysticks. For example, I've got a Logitech Extreme Digital 3D Flightstick, and it's an excellent piece of hardware. Too bad flightsims stopped being made right around the time I bought it, but that's not a fault of the controller. I can almost guarantee that the problems the OP was having with his gamepad were brought on by Xinput, not by any shoddy work on Logitech's end.

Do you want a totally masculine, definitely not effeminate, PC master race god hug to comfort you?

By the way, did you look into something called MotionInJoy? It's an unofficial driver that should let you use your DS3 on your PC. I've been meaning to try it, but I've heard good things about it.

I got a gamepad when I baught my first Need for Speed game for the PC. Suffice to say, I dont use gamepads, but not because of what you might think, because I just dont play enough PC games for enough time to justify a purchase.

It sounds like you need Divine Intervention [http://www.motioninjoy.com]. MotionJoy solved all of my problems and more, it even has different settings for emulating a 360 controller or being set up as a standard PS1, PS2 or PS3 controller.

No purchase of extra plasticy bits necessary.

It's great! I bought Splinter Cell Conviction a while back and after fumbling around with it for a while I decided to get my PS3 control working no matter what! And MotionJoy does just that.

Re: Logitech and Xinput - Yes most of my problems are from Xinput, but my Logitech pad has a Xinput/Direct input toggle option. I suspect most of it comes down to drivers and software compats.

It's not really logitechs fault, developers make the games to work with the official gamepad and call it a day.

Re: Madcatz - it wasn't in the brick and mortar, so I didn't buy it

Re: Hugs - Only if it's in a totally masculine non-gay way

Re: Xinput, WHY? - Because it was a way to destroy the competing market quietly without raising a fuss. I suspect MS wanted a chunk of that hot plastic controller action and figured the best way to do so was to control everything from topdown monopoly style.

I looked into and even tried motioninjoy but couldn't get it to work even after downloading everything and installing the drivers, the program did inform me I needed some sort of USB dongle for it to work best and I figured that was the problem and gave up.

I'm not THAT tech savvy. I just want to plug the bleeding thing in and play.

My Logitech pad works perfectly, clearly your story is completely false.

Less sarcastic answer: No, really, my Logitech pad works perfectly. Could yours have been defective?

Methinks that perhaps you were following the instructions to work it wirelessly? I know that once the drivers are installed and a reboot later I had my PS3 remote working as long as it was plugged in with the charging cable. Though just recently I got a Bluetooth USB dongle and now have one of my three PS3 remotes dedicated to being a PC controller.

Sorry to hear you can't get it working though.

I'm surprised about the Madcatz controller; around here, pretty much every store that carries Xbox 360 supplies carries it, including Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop, and FYE (Which is a chain of mall record stores, for those who don't know.)

Other than that, what you're saying makes sense.

I thought this too until I actually tried it with a gamepad and an analog stick makes a world of difference believe me. Using the RT for run turns my hand into a gnarled witches claw after 30 mins or so though.

Possible, but too much of a pain in the ass to find out and I've never had a good time returning things to Bestbuy. I usually avoid the store like the plague but Gamestop didn't have what I needed suprise suprise.

It's not a complete wash, from what I understand the offic. Xbox Dethmachine doesn't work too well with OLDER games so if for some reason I get like, the sega classics collection, my Logitech with it's directinput will be fabulous. Or I could give it to someone more needy and tech savvy than I.

I have a closet full of old PC peripherals including keyboards with analog hookups that are at least a decade old, so it's not like i'm going to throw the thing out.

It's a lot simpler to just play on consoles. At least the right controllers come with the machine itself.

Off topic: It was quite fun to read all that with the most preposterous and posh british accent I could imagine.

http://www.gamefront.com/how-to-use-a-ps3-controller-on-a-pc/
-seriously, it's really simple, and it worked great for me... there's also a more complicated way to do it that involves buying a bluetooth adapter for your PC if you're addicted to spending money.

yet I still prefer my 10-year-old Gravis gamepad pro for most games...

I used a generic logitech gamepad, it was awesome. For Recettear. It depends on the game you play. There won't be a perfect controller for all situations.

$60 for a controller? For that money I'd expect the damn thing to be made out of steel. I picked up a brand new wired 360 controller a week ago for £14. The only things it isn't so good for are dosbox games and emulators. £6 netted a Speedlink DS2 adapter. Sorted those out.

I got through the first world of SMB with the keyboard controls, it was only on the second world that I was forced to figure out how to get my controller working for it, and got it feels so much better.

I also bought arkham asylum, and that works better with a controller to. If a game's movement is controlled via the left and right analogue sticks on a gamepad, then it's better played with a mouse, if the right analogue stick controls all movement and left stick is just camera, then it's better to play it with a controller.

to be fair, I use both Gamepad and Keyboard when I play Super Meat Boy

Gamepad is good for fast and constant movements, but when I need precision, I use they keyboard
