Since I don't have time to write tedious exposition let's get on with it. You, for reasons unknown, have been assigned to help a coma victim recover and adjust to modern life, as they have been in a coma for 16 years. Somehow they avoided permanent brain damage, which they ordinarily would have suffered if they had been out for more than five days.

16 years ago, this person was an avid gamer, and they want to get back into their hobby.

What games do you show them first, what do you tell them about how the industry has changed? You have access to every game ever, except Mario Party 7. It probably won't be missed.

Start from where they last played and work them up until modern times. Essentially give them a few of the best or most popular games from each console and after a month or so, go onto the next console (increase by graphics). Should be finished in about a year give or take a few months...

Gradually, games have progressed a lot and the controllers will no doubt be daunting to someone unfamiliar with them. Also show him the Wii, I want to know his reaction.

After they get a crash-course in basics (current geopolitics, Internet), my course of action would be:

First: brief them on the history of videogaming since 1994. Tell how the landscape of the industry has changed. The twilight of adventure games, the rise and fall of 3D platformers, the dawn of online age. To the theme tune of the Terminator, of course - for added lolz. I'd probably write a grim, dark, overly dramatic speech specifically for that and record their reaction on camera.

As they get the basic grasp of what the hell happened, i will show that person Half-Life. The first one. Then the second one. Then Ratchet & Clank series, of course - i could also use these to show the evolution of graphics from 2002 to 2010. Then give them "underappreciated gems" - Beyond Good & Evil, Psychonauts, Freedom Force.

Then my job will probably be over - if that person wants to know more, they can just dig through that collection of EVERY GAME EVER. Or use Wikipedia.

I'd probably do it year by year. But I'd ask what their favourite genre is and focus on that. So yeah, genre by genre and year by year. Oh and for sure do competitive games between the two us to build up their willingness to improve.
