Gamer Haters

There seems to be a very huge reservation for video games as the blame figure for why the children are so angry and about to use guns on their fellow classmates. I don't buy it and I'll tell you why. The crime rate is down, and I'm not kidding when I say the most murders happened when they didn't release a GTA game.

The truth is that there is no correlation between video games and the real world. The media and politicians are just obviously looking for a blame figure in a way that is reminiscent of the Third Reich. I simply don't understand this next bit either:

there is a perfectly good rating system called ESRB, so what's the point on legislation telling the kiddies to back off the pixels, what are they complaining about? There is no reason for the hatred from everyone and I'm pretty sure that if a hardcore gamer were to run for political office then they would face endless discrimination.

So what do you think on the issue?

Parents suck at parenting, so they therefor have to blame something else for their shortcomings. (Not directed at all parents)

This. Also, society is far too obsessed with... political correctness... *shudder*

True, but there's nothing politically correct about it.
Ignorantly bashing games for one thing is constant. Mass Effect.
And I heard that Fallout 3 is getting bashed for having a secret sex scene you could only get if you were looking for it.

I'm not necessarily going to say that video games aren't influencing the problem, but I am going to say that they're not the cause of the issue.

The misunderstanding of our society today is that people are so quick to blame a single source, when it's obviously a culmination of several different situations combined into one. I'm not so sure that video games could drive someone to commit murder in real life; for someone to assume such is very wrong.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I'd have about $50. As for what I think about the issue, well, you pretty much said it already. Games are being used as a scapegoat, and out of all the crimes blamed on video games, probably 1 in 1000 turn out to actually be related to them.

oh no- not again! I hope a video game holocaust doesn't start, led my armies of amish protestors, destroying all video games, including their wives and children, until our streets never contain video games again.

The horror!

I have never heard of this... the game does have prostitutes... but nothing ever actually goes on...

Here's the thing. As much as gamers feel the need to jump to the defense of video games, saying they cause no violence and other sources should be looked at (which I believe to a point), you all need to look at some of the responses that most gamers have to a question. )Bear in mind these are people of at least average intelligence who are as a general statement >12 years old). If you could have one thing what would it be? You'll get responses talking about the different kinds of weapons people want. If you could have a superpower which is one of the following...? You'll generally get people talking about the ones that blow shit up and kill others. I'm not saying that any of these people would ever actually act on it, but you have to look at what gamers are saying beyond this debate to really get an idea of what video games do to their brains.
And now I fully expect to be bitched at by about 50 of you.

The odds are defiantly less. Games don't cause people to kill, in fact they may stop people from killing someone. Think about it, if you are really angry about something and then play an "extremely violent" game, how do you feel afterwords. I bet you feel a whole lot better. Games will help take away the pain and anger of life. There are better things to blame, and when I say better I mean the ones that are the actually causes of this horrible tragedies.

One last note: There are a very rare few how are too disturb to play video games. These rare psychotic people should be kept away from video games (especially violent) for they very well hurt others due to these games.
An example of these people is Jack Thompson. Seriously, this guy has no concept of reality|fantasy. Look at what these games did to him and what he did to the world. He would be the type of person to kill a lot of people because to a violent game, just be glad the took the bitchy way.

One thing I find stupid is when people censor stuff in video games.

Taking away the drug names in fallout 3?
I feel way less immersed taking fictional drugs than the real thing.

i heard that from a psychological view point our desire for pretend violence increases as our need for real violence decreases. which would make sense. violence is all over the media. it's just human nature. at least we don't have a national pastime like killing foxes as sport.

oh wait...

I hate the fact that this is even an issue. In America, divorce rates are at 50% and climbing I think. While having divorced parents doesn't mean that the parenting gets shitty, it's hard to keep an eye on your kid all the time. I'm not saying that divorces are what causes violence among children, I'm just saying it's ridiculous that people are so quick to blame video games when a 50% divorce rate is much more damaging than video games ever could be.

Again, I'm not saying all divorces are always a bad thing, but people need to look at more important issues than just blaming video games for most violent problems.

Parents need someone to blame for their kids turning out bad so they blame either TV or video games, when really it's their own faults for not raising their kids right. Also Jack Thompson didn't help things, but he got disbarred, so HA HA HA!
