Gamer Sets World Record on Trashed Arcade Machine

A trash picker that rescued Cosmic Monsters from the dump twenty years ago has set a world record in the game.

Most people have probably forgotten about classic arcade clone Cosmic Monsters by now, which has worked to gamer Justin Baxter's advantage. He rescued a Cosmic cabinet from the scrapyard in 1990, and has been playing for years so he could reportedly set a world record.

Baxter recently recorded a score of 145,680, beating out the supposed previous Cosmic Monsters world record score of 105,310. It only took Baxter at least 7 years of play. Hey, if you've got an arcade machine that barely anyone else has, why not go for the gold?

"I knew I could beat it," Baxter said. "Over the last seven years I've honed a system. I always wondered what it would be like to tell people I'm a world record holder and now I can find out. I'm not sure how impressed they'll be though."

SWNS reports that Baxter's score is a Guinness World Record, though Twin Galaxies, often considered the authority in videogame world records, doesn't list any scores for the "variation" at all. Meanwhile, the record scores for Space Invaders max out at around 55,000. Even if Baxter doesn't actually have a world record, he deserves some recognition just for playing a doomed arcade clone for so long.

The hunt for the Cosmic Monsters world record doesn't quite have the pizazz of King of Kong [http://www.amazon.com/King-Kong-Fistful-Quarters/dp/B000XQ4HR8], mostly because I don't think Baxter reached a kill screen, but he's still not done. Baxter says that he has plans to beat his own record, but if we're lucky, a sheen-haired rival will appear to give Baxter a run for his money.

This guy sounds like he leads an exiting life.
What's an "exiting life"? I kid I kid. And ofcourse he does! He's a world record holder!

OT: Well, he had a dream, and he did it. Many props to him.

THis is a man who has his priorities in order. XD

That being said, thats pretty cool. Too bad for it to be a record, you need some Record officials to watch. Oh well, maybe we'll find a plaque one day in a junk yard that says world's best gamer.

Or he can make his own.

On a side note, If it gives you the option to put your initials in when you win, I hope he put ASS. X3

No, no, no, no, no.

We don't need another Billy Mitchell. Seriously, if I saw him out in the streets I'd shove his stupid American tie down his big mouth.

I hate that guy.

So this guy is now a world record holder at a cheap clone of a game that was famous somewhere in the '80s? If that's not going to get him all the girls I don't know what will...

That kinda sounds like a bad case of OCD.
To be honest, these straight up 'highest points' records just aren't that interesting.
It's basically doing the same thing arbitrarily in a system you've mastered.
Kinda like typing the same word over and over and over and over and oevr until you make a mistake.
Some of them are kinda awesome though, like the the guy who maxed out the score meter in tetris, but that's only because you got to watch him do his magic on youtube.

I'd be far more impressed by something like winning 100 consecutive games in the 2000+ rating diamond league in StarCraft 2.
That would require insane skills.

Oh didn't you know? The ladies just love a man with arcade skills. They require significant dexterity with the hands....

Or something. Okay maybe not....

OT: Yeahh well...good for him? A record's a record I guess, but it's not exactly something he can brag about to the average person :p

Still, fair play on the dedication.

Well, I like games a lot but I've never been struck by the desire to be the worlds best. Maybe I lack ambition in the world of gaming but I'm focusing my attention on my education/career.

I'd love to break a video game record, but I'm too busy working, going to school, watching Celtics games, and sleeping with women. Somehow I don't think Space Invaders knockoffs can compete.

Eye strain much? What is the next record going to be, a decade? I just hope he goes outside, read a paper, catch up on the news, check out the internet a little, not have his mind erupt when he realizes there are graphics surpassing the current generation consoles (PS360Wii), look up who the president is, check his insurance status.... y'know, just some timeline catch-up. Seriously, 7 years of mind-numbing Space Invader knockoff record-breaking has to eat up a lot of a person's spare time.

...

Oh! And he should check out The Hangover; I'm sure that 7 years of Arcade-owning would make me feel like I was drugged by some roofalin! :p

But wouldn't that dexterity apply more to men... y'know, analog stick and...
I think I'll better stop this now.

I once read a magazine article about people who achieved certain things in videogames and often times it took them years to get it. And when they were asked whether or not it was worth it, they universally said no, HAHA.
