Yeah, it's not so much logic as a conditioned reflex that most gamers develop...
The "explore everwhere and grab everything" mentality is something almost every RPG-player pick up pretty early.
Especially when there are tough monsters and such around. The more trouble you have to go through to get that magic telescope-broom, or whatever, the better it must be.

He gave up on including puzzles pretty soon after that.
If I were the DM, I'd make a puzzle like that.
Except when you push both switches at the same time, the doors behind you slam shut, then the rooms starts filling up with water. The key was hidden under a loose floorboard/rock/the doormat just in front of the door.

Death by genre savvyness. It's so deliciously ironic.
