Jesus. If you say "I have no expertise in this" like in here and the SOPA hearings, you should be laughed out of society then forced to watch your stupidity Clockwork style till you realize how fucking stupid you were.

These people probably know they shouldn't be speaking at these things, they are generally either on some sort of irrational moral crusade to be right at any cost or paid to appear by special interest groups to represent their opinion.

In either situation, they're not really going to care that they're wrong.

I don't care enough to get angry nor say naughty words.

The fact is, people come home from work at age twenty+ and watch movies or television. I see interacting with your media being no different.

They're trying to prove that he is criminally insane and has issues discerning from video games and reality. At a guess this comes from a greater context where they're trying to say that the level of obsession to take the world as real isn't normal in a 20 year old. Although that's also pretty ignorant, you can't blame someone for not knowing the lengths that people get into WoW. I highly doubt they're trying to prove that video games made him kill, they're just using his obsession with video games to prove a point.

That's not actually what was said and I really wish this hadn't become so publicized... although the reason why it did is clear: controversy = add revenue.

If we're talking about the same psychologist what he actually said was more along the lines of 'interacting exclusively with people in games is not normal social interaction', which is correct. There's a big difference between talking with a person face to face and locking yourself in your room devoid of almost all human contact, as Brevik apparently did, and communicating purely through the internet and games.

It was a mistranslation that's since gotten big all over teh internets as everyone does the typical defensive kneejerk reactionary thing.

Yeah, aside from the fact that the average age of a gamer in Australia is about 24? the article seems to have been trying to imply the rather old and unproven argument that "gaming will turn you into a mass murderer" I see that article is trying to use gaming as an excuse for rationalising behaviour, not true fellas, try again.

I will inform my friends. I will inform 5+ lawyers, several engineers, a biochemist, two software engineers, a secretary, a physical therapist, two housewives and so on, males and females, ages 22-30. I will also inform my 67-year old father that his time spent with Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft are signs of being "weird"...

It may not be normal, but it's not inherently wrong either, which is what it seems the prosecution lawyers are trying to prove atm.

Either way it's pretty retarded.

I have no expertise on psychology, but the man is wrong.

But please, tell me more about how I am not a normal regular everyday guy.
I am taking an education, I am in a committed relationship, I have a lot of friends and i go out every now and then.

I'm waiting for Fox News to hire this guy as their senior psychological analyst. He'd fit right in with their right-wing brainwashing agenda.

Ok that is just stupid since the reason why gaming had been far more popular than it was in the 80's or 90's is the because the said group took a interest in gaming. Therefore he pretty much calling almost everyone not normal.

I'm more upset by Destructoid's annoyingly distracting ad for Pizza Hut.

But, yeah, this whole thing with Breivik and his gaming habits have becoming totally farcical. It's sad, but, there ya go.

What is normal, though, is people like this expressing opinion on a medium the don't have the smallest sliver of understanding about. It has happened to every single entertainment medium throughout history. It's like these people are begging to become the laughing stock of the next generation.

I'm 43. Playing games is my preferred form of entertainment, it has been all my life. It did not prevent me from getting an engineering degree, marrying, having a son, and generally leading a productive life. Go figure.

Yes, it was - try reading Destructoid's resource EDGE [http://www.edge-online.com/news/breivik-trial-sitting-alone-and-playing-games-not-normal-man-his-20s].

Breivik has previously discussed using Call Of Duty as a rehearsal sandbox for his attack plans. The most recent round of expert testimony concerns the year-long sabbatical Breivik took between the summers of 2006 and 2007, which he spent playing World Of Warcraft full-time, or roughly 16 hours a day, from a room in his Mother?s Oslo flat.

In response to Judge Elizabeth Arntzen inquiry whether interviews with one of Breivik?s acquaintances in WOW supported their view of a personal breakdown, psychiatrist Synne Sørheim responded: ?We feel that playing a lot of computer games gives the impression of a working cognitive function. It is however, something completely different to relate to something in real life, have committed relationships to other people, arrange meetings, go to work in the morning, have a healthy relationship with a girlfriend, or having common social skills.?
So far, somewhat agreeable, right?

When the judge asked whether Breivik?s behaviour during this period might be described as gaming addiction, Sørheim tooks the opportunity to say what she really thinks: ?I would still like to point out that sitting alone in your room and playing games, no matter what the scope of the matter, call it addiction or whatnot, is not normal for a man in his 20's.?

While it?s not surprising to hear that many older individuals continue to cling to the stereotype of videogames being an aberrant interest, it should be noted that Sørheim admitted to the judge moments earlier, ?We have no form of expertise when it comes to computer games.?
This is where her agenda becomes very damn clear. Who is the "we" she is referring to, also? It's quite possible special interest groups are being represented here.

Most interesting for me has been Breivik's earlier response;

Some people like to play golf, some like to sail, I played WOW. It had nothing to do with 22 July. It's not a world you are engulfed by. It's simply a hobby. WOW is only a fantasy game, which is not violent at all. It's just fantasy. It's a strategy game. You co-operate with a lot of others to overcome challenges. That's why you do it. It's a very social game. Half of the time you are connected in communication with others. It would be wrong to consider it an antisocial game.
