Gamerscore, why?

I kind of like it. Not enough to do anything more than simply playing the game. I don't hunt. I can see the appeal for others, though. Personnaly, that only thing I really don't like about them is how they can ruin a moment. You know what I mean. You get to the ending of a game; this is one of, if not the most, emotional moments in a game (granted your emotionally invested, of course). And... Pop! Acvhievement Unlocked! Argh! Can't you wait till after the credits! I didn't have that problem with Halo Reach. It had a quick hiccup that made it think I didn't finish the game; and I got to enjoy the ending as it was supposed to look. I've never been so grateful to be robbed of the credit I deserved.

There's an odd sense of satisfaction to earning some. And I've got a bit of an OCD complex, so i wanna get 1000/1000 some times.
This is my take on them. I could care less about how many trophies I have, whether they're gold/silver/bronze. I care about the 100% next to the title. I've been like that for a long time, even in my PS1/PS2 days, I'd play a game until I unlocked everything or felt that game was 100% completed to my personal preference. Now I just have an actual percentage telling me how close i am.

I think they're fun, and sometimes give me new things to try once I've beaten a game, though I won't try for one more than half an hour.

Not to mention it's turned into a small inside joke between a few friends. "What the hell are you doing?" "There's an achieeeeevement for it."

when i realized that gamerscore meant nothing and especially didnt get you points on XBOX live, i was pissed and reasonably so.

it should equal points on xbox live. if not, get rid of it, microsoft.

It's not really important to me, but getting achievements does add a certain level to challenge to a game, which is always welcome, especially since it's optional.

Does anybody really take gamerscore seriously? I don't see the point, can you use the points to get any goodies a lá Nintendo?

Your thoughts please
Why does it matter to you? Its a total score that's meant to represent how many achievements you get. Its not that complicated,it makes you feel better about the time you spent, and allows you to keep proof of the work you put into a game.

Complaining about gamerscore and achievements is the same as asking why Call of duty keeps track of your total points or kills, its just Stats.

That, and it makes your E-peen big enough to kill a bear with it. ^_^

Agreed. I don't understand gamerscore or achievements for that matter.

I used to think gamerscore meant nothing to me until I got a Wii and started playing. What I mean is that a lot of Nintendo games are about going back and finishing off the fetch quests (stars...it is ALWYAYS STARS!) after you beat the game. What gamerscore and trophies do are give you a reason to go back and finish it. Why spend hours getting all the stars in Galaxy just to get the stars? With achievements they at least recognize that you have done something, it might be a useless number and a witty name and icon, but it's something.

its basically just for over inflated ego's, and it just feels good to unlock achievements.

But rumor has it from the start microsoft was going to use that system to also buy stuff.

I'm neither, I just don't see the point of them, and why some people take them so seriously. It's not like you can do anything with them.
So what you are really saying is: "Hey you people that like gamerscore, stop having fun."

It's a nice little thing there that helps you keep track of..... something? I don't mind gamerscore, but I don't care about it either. It's just something there. I don't care about trophies either, and I don't care about achievements as well, except when they help check up on stats. In my opinion, achievement should be replaced with a stats page that lists how many enemies you've killed and that sort of thing.

But all in all, it's harmless. Achievements don't hurt games and they don't require much effort to implement into a game, and some people like them, so what's the harm? Just let gamerscore be, and let those that like it, like it. For the rest of us, it's easy to ignore.

As most people have already said it's basically just to show how much more time you've pumped into your games than others. Or, to put it more realistically, how much more time you've spent exclusively buying the kinds of shitty, over achievement giving games just to level up your internet dick and wave it in the faces of others.

Though I happen to quite like it.

It's kind of fun to earn trophies/achievements, but it really is meaningless.

The only time I really took notice of my gamerscore was when I was approaching some sort of landmark. Like if I had 29,600 or something, I'd get slightly excited about hitting 30K.

Since I've switched almost exclusively to PS3, I haven't experienced that with trophies, since they make it tougher to track your progress.

Its not exactly intrusive, so I fail to see why anyone would dislike them. If there are people who like them, then good on them, as they have found a simplistic way of tallying progress in multiple games compelling. If not, then thats cool too. Personally, I prefer Steam achievements, due to the lack of similarity between 360 titles for the ease of getting gamerscore from one game to the next.

It gives you a sense of achievement (obviously) and can offer some replay value. I think that having the right achievements at the correct points during games can heighten your experience. Boring achievements can't make a game worse, but good ones can certainly make a game better.

im for it and now that i have an xbox instead of a wii it took some adjusting but i realise its there and go for some in reach ones

though i tend to play the games ive got a 1000 in (like fifa 10 and tekken 6 which have obvious repley value) just for fun than any uncompleted game which makes sense because if ur gona play a good game alot anyway chances r ull have max points

also like someone mentioned above think back to wii or past generation games where for whatever reson u got all the stars or collectbles. 360 just recognizes that i guess.

also picture a crap game. people might actaully buy or at least rent it if it has easy acheivments. but if a game is bad and has hard acheivments no ones gonna buy it for that so its a win for the devepors - but the do get criticised at times for having say 5 acheivements like csi did so its up to them

I don't really care one way or the other, except when the little popups come up and ring during a cutscene or some serious part of the game. When I'm blasting baddies of some sort, sure give me my high score, not during the storytelling portion.
