I know in high quality movies you can do this but so it got me thinking... can you do it in games, and would it be useful?

Can you set the spoken language as one (maybe native to the game, or possibly have every single game in Japanese if you REALLY like anime) but still have the option to set the subtitles to a language that you actually understand rather than just 'on'?

Am I just speculating? Does this already exist? Am I a movie/anime fanatic that should be shot on site for ever suggesting such heresy? Did I not use the search function properly?

All answers welcome :p (I bet you this dies in like 2 hours at most)

Yes, this already exists. Xbox 360 usually does this pretty well in Korea. Most of the games here have the audio from the country of origin, like Japanese or English. They also have subtitles in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese. This is pretty much how every game is done in the North Asia region.

Of course they always do some stuff that ends up being totally insane. One of my friends here bought Fallout 3 for Xbox 360. There are no in-game subtitles. There is however, a massive translation book. It has basically all the conversations you can have in the entire game and their Korean translations. It's totally whacked out, I have no idea why they didn't just do it in game.

I think you can in most games.
I think Soul Calibur IV does it. My girlfriend insists of japanese voices with english subtitles ¬_¬

I play on PC and I rarely get many options to change languages apart from playing them entirely in that, so is it a lot different on the 360?
As in set the speech to X language and the subtitles to Y... usually my options range form English to English, and very rarely outside of that (Crysis allowed for some Korean :p).
I'm guessing I'm gonna have to start importing games if I want this, don't I?

Hmm...I'm not too sure since it's been awhile since I've even touched them, but I'm pretty sure my that my european Fatal Frame gives you language options when you first start the game. But now that I think of it, it may not effect the voice acting. I never looked it up or tried it, so... Another game that I 'think' has a change language option is Forbidden Siren 2, from english to japanese. But uh...again, I don't own the thing yet, so I can't be possitive.

...those were two very poor examples.
Uh, Soul Calibur. Yeah.

so not very many options? :( Bah, I really wanted to play COD4 in German (can anybody in Germany confirm if this is even possible?). Guess I'll stick to playing games as they are for now, but it is slightly disappointing. Maybe in the future people might start doing language mods for games just like you get fandubs in anime. Why does that sound so sarcastic o0?
