I've just noticed that at least among the genres I play, games are gradually kind of getting "too good for their own good". What I mean by that is games are getting too complex rather, and these complexities are initially perceived as factors that will make the games good. These are of course my own opinions, but two prime examples of this in my eyes are the Call of Duty series, and it might surprise some people, but the Fallout series. Now Call of Duty has clearly been taking a slippery slope down, the game constantly trying to outdo itself, without actually just repeating what they got right. From the simplicity of Call of Duty 2, to the fair complexity of Call of Duty 4, the jump to create a perk and class system, while proving to be a revolutionary idea in multiplayer shooters, clearly had extreme potential to create ridiculous unbalance and mess up the whole series. The jump from Call of Duty 4 to Modern Warfare 2 introduced that same unbalance that was very possible in Call of Duty 4. Infinity Ward tried to do too much which resulted in an unbalanced and generally not well received game by the community. Infinity Ward tried to outdo its success of Call of Duty 4, not by reusing its engine, but by adding all sorts of unnecessary things, that made what would otherwise have been a pretty deep and balanced game, into arguably the worst received game in the whole series. This might just be a recent trend in games, but does anyone else feel the same way?
Other examples are Halo. I don't know anything about this series, but apparently in terms of multiplayer the order goes Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo:Reach
Fallout in my opinion appears to be suffering Call of Duty Syndrome, and tried to outdo itself too much and in the result creating a game (New Vegas) thats inferior to its predecessor (Fallout 3)
These are of course my own opinions, would love to hear if anyone else has been feeling the same way, or if anyone completely disagrees with me and would like to tell me I'm insane for thinking these things. Either way, might make for an interesting conversation.
