After watching Yahtzee's review of Sonic: Unleashed i also thought back to the days of 2D games. how do you all feel about old games going 3D? with most games they do a great job, such as Zelda and Metroid. there are also those that got worse. Every 3D Mario and Sonic game i've played haven't been as good as they were when they were 2D. Mario 64 was OK but it was no-where near as good as the games used to be, especially Mario Bros. 3 which is still my favorite Mario game by far. The Sonic games aren't as good as they used to be, either. what if they made a new Smash Bros game and put it 3D? I think I'd prefer it to stay side scrolling. Maybe i'm going about it the wrong way. it may not be the fact that it's gone 3D but the amount they have changed. With the original Mario there was the fire flower, growing mushrooms and invincibility stars which don't seem to be in it any more.

so to sum up, has turning 3D taken something out of old 2D games, or has it improved them? what do you think

well there are some games that just work better on a 2D scale, Sonic is one of them. But there are interesting things you can do in a 3D setting as well. The Prince of Persia games became way more entertaining when they were remade in 3D.

Something that is interesting, and maybe the Sonic development team should look into it, is what the new Street Fighter game is doing. It is a 3D/2D game. It will be great to see a game from my child hood fleshed out in 3D but, nothing will be lost and it will still be on the 2D plain that makes the game just work. Not that 3D fighters don't work, I do like the Soul Calibur series a lot, but its just not how Street Fighter should be made.

The issue with Sonic and 3D is speed. One thing I really think the Sonic team is missing out on is that you >can< make speedy 3D games. Take a look at games like Team Fortress Classic (NOT TF2!) or any other old TF game. They are INSANELY fast and very manageable. In fact, they can easily be faster without issue. The Sonic team feels that a 3D Sonic would be too hard to play if it were fast. I disagree.

Take a look at any racing game with any sense of speed. Those are fun, manageable, and FAST. Why can't they do this with Sonic?

I really think the Sonic devs are lazy. They spout off excuses about how a fast 3D sonic game won't work. They spout off things like "The game would only be a few hours long" and "It would be too hard to control!" Personally, I think they are just lazy. They don't want to take the time to make a good Sonic game because they know that the game will sell because of the name of the character and not because of the quality of the game.

I also find that Sonic fans are the most deluded of all kinds of fans, and it's a shame. They're the reason why Sonic isn't getting a second chance.

Got talking to a few friends about this earlier today and began remoniscing about platformers in general. Then when we came to think about it we couldn't think of a decent platformer that came out recently. The last one that sprang to mind was Super Mario Galaxy. (Bear in mind I haven't played the new Banjo yet, so I don't know if that'd count!) For some reason whenever clear potential for a platformer comes from an idea, developers seem to always tag on some form of combat in there. Then the game becomes labelled as an Action Platformer, then all gamers lose interest in it simultaneously!

When will developers realise we don't always want to be the crud out of things, sometimes we just want to classic platforming fun! I honestly think that if someone made a decent platformer now it'd sell out pretty much instantly. So what if it's all been done before, it's a formula that has worked well in the past and if brought up to current gen standards you could get a damn nice looking one to!

Either way, since when has ranting on a forum managed to get what us gamers want? And I shall end this by saying, BLARG!

I'd rather see new IP's (intellectual properties) as 3D games rather than all these 2D classics being remade in 3D. It usually doesn't work very well. The classic example is Sonic the Hedgehog. His 2D games are great and hold up really well, but his 3D games are just excercises in frustration. Going 3D seems to take away the whole pinball-ish, super fast rhythm that made Sonic great in the first place. Also, the 3D levels dont seem to be as well made as the 2D ones were. The great thing about the original Sonic levels was that you hardly ever got stuck. There were hardly any dead ends and you almost always had more than one way to beat a level.

About the only 2D to 3D conversion I've seen that I really like is Super Paper Mario for the Wii. Now that game takes the whole concept of going from 2D to 3D and turns it into part of the whole puzzle solving gameplay. It is the hook that keeps you playing. That's the way the transition should be done: in a way that makes the game different and fun.

I must also admit that I like Metroid Prime Corruption a little better than some of the early Metroid games. It's still hard to play and a bit too frustrating in parts, but I do like the first person perspective and how well the shooting works on the Wii.

Most 2D games should stay that way though.

For that matter, I'd like to see more 3D games go 2D, especially on portable gaming systems as 2D looks so much better on my DS and cell phone than 3D does. 2D graphics are also easier to program than 3D, giving developers more time and money to concentrate on level design and story if they wanted to. Remember when they did Halo in 2D? That was pretty cool. Alien Hominid was also a 2D game that showed just how popular and fun a new 2D game could be when it went from free online game to disc game that sold pretty well in stores.

I think sonic should have stayed 2D think about it like this the 8-way scroller isn't hard to code you could make the game with a handfull of people; 1 programmer/graphic artist/musican/level designer.
It would cost next to nothing to make and take no time at all compared to contemporary games and you could sell it cheaply and still make money sure It wouldn't keep a company a float but no reason why they can't make it a side project when making new games.
2D has the capacity to look perfect unlike the 16x16bit sprites of old and could be ported to any system.

They should have made Sonic a 2.5D game with multiple depth layers.

turbo side scrolling while changing depth layers on the fly to dodge obstacles and change routes would have been awesome.

well mario's 3d finally cought up with his 2d, super mario brothers 3 is one of my favorites too, and ive gotta say that galaxy is just as good.
super metroid was fun. metroid prime was incredible.
zelda made the transition well, sometimes i still prefer my 2d, but the latest one for the wii was quite well done.
sonic... excuse me i need to go set something (preferably something that works for sega) on fire.
