Is it just me or are games becoming more and more sterile?

Sure, with the Xbox 360 and the PS3 explosions became more impressive and everything looks better, but if I made a list of games that I enjoyed very much, there would be more games form the SNES/PS1 era than form the current consoles.

I aked myself what I miss in newer releases and as clichée as it may sound, it simply is a good story and fleshed out characters. It's as simple as that. 'Dead Space' for example is a very entertaining game, but a mute protagonist doesn't help me get attached to the story at all.
One of the more positive games (although a commercial failure) I encountered was 'Lost Odyssey'. Yes, it may have gameplay issues and some annoying characters, but for the first in a long time since I bought my 360, I played the game simply for the story to continue.

In my opinion the PS1 was the ultimate fusion of technical possibilities and storytelling. Take Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile or Wild Arms 2 for example: the cutscenes were astonishing for their time and yet the story played a major role in the whole package.
